SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
BY FACTORING

• How will you know if a quadratic equation

can be solved by FACTORING?

• How will you determine the SOLUTIONS

of a quadratic equations by factoring?
FACTORING

𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 15 (𝑥 − 5)(𝑥 − 3)
2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 6 (2𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 2)
2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 3 (2𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 3)
𝑥2 − 𝑥 − 6 (𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 − 3)
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

• Consider a polynomial expression in the

2
form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

• The polynomial can be factored if there

are two factors of 𝑎𝑐 whose sum is 𝑏
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

• There are two main situations. One

where the constant is positive, and one
when the constant is negative.

𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 or 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 − 𝑐
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

2
When the constant 𝑐 is positive: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

The polynomial can be factored only

if there are two factors of 𝑎𝑐 that
add to be the absolute value of 𝑏.
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

2
𝐸𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒: 6𝑥 +7𝑥 + 2
Identify the value of 𝑎𝑐: 𝑎 = 6, 𝑐 = 2
Identify the product 𝑎𝑐: 𝑎𝑐 = 12
Since the product of 𝑎𝑐 is 12, what
factors of 12 gives a sum of the b ?
The factors of 12 whose sum is 7 are 4 & 3.
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

2
When the constant 𝑐 is positive: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 − 𝑐

The polynomial can be factored only

if there are two factors of 𝑎𝑐 that
have a difference of the absolute
value of 𝑏.
AC METHOD OF FACTORING

2
𝐸𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒: 2𝑥 −3𝑥 − 5
Identify the value of 𝑎𝑐: 𝑎 = 2, 𝑐 = −5
Identify the product 𝑎𝑐: 𝑎𝑐 = −10

Since the product of 𝑎𝑐 is -10, what factors of -

10 gives a difference of b ?

The factors of -10 whose difference is -3 are -5 & 2.

ZERO PRODUCT PROPERTY

The zero product property, also

called zero-product principle,
states that for any real numbers 𝑎
and 𝑏, if 𝑎𝑏 = 0, then 𝑎 equals
zero, 𝑏 equals zero, or both 𝑎 and
𝑏 equal zero.
ZERO PRODUCT PROPERTY

𝐸𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒:
If 𝑥 𝑥 + 2 = 0, then 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 + 2 = 0

𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = −2

2
𝐸𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒: 𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
• Let us find the factor of the expression

𝑥 2 +5𝑥 + 6.

• Using the ac method, the factors are

(𝑥 + 3) and (𝑥 + 2).
FINDING THE SOLUTIONS OF
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY FACTORING

2
𝐸𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒: 𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
• Applying the zero product property,
equate each factor to zero. Thus,

𝑥 + 3 = 0 and 𝑥 + 2 = 0
• And solve for the value of 𝑥 of each
equation. 𝑥 = −3 and 𝑥 = −2
