III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activities
A. Preparation
a. Prayer May I request everyone to please stand up and let’s start our
day with a prayer.

(Prayer)
We thank you Lord a hundredfold for the love and care that You have
given us. May we return to You Your good works by multiplying it
with love and respect, adding more faith, subtracting worldly
behavior and evil works, and dividing Your given talents to others, so
we can sum them all and be united as one in Your family. In this we
pray, Amen.

b. Greetings Good morning class.

Please take your seat.

c. Checking of I will now check your attendance based on your seat plan. So
attendance kindly go back to your proper seat because you might be
marked absent.

No one's absent, very good! It's a good start.

d. Review Last time, we discussed the division of polynomials using the long
division. Now let us recall your knowledge in dividing polynomials.

(Call two students to answer on the board.)

Divide the polynomials using long division.

(x2 + 9x + 14) ÷ (x + 7)
B. Presentation
a. Motivation
Before we proceed with our new lesson, let us first have a group
activity. The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be
given a manila paper and a marker for your output. This activity is
entitled “Let’s go to the beach”.
Imagine you are going for an outing with your family. You gathered at
the front of the Jimalalud Public Market and everyone wants to be in
the beach in less than an hour.

Make a sketch of the path that you will take to reach the beach in a
short span of time! Be creative! Post your work on the board.

b. Analysis How did you find the activity?

What did you do to be on the beach in a short span of time?
Which road did you take?

c. Discussion “The beauty of Mathematics lies on the existence of varied modalities

Proper to simplify expressions and solve problems. It allows us to go
through varied paths yet arriving at the same destination”.
We all love shortcuts. Just like with division of polynomials, we have a
shortcut method. And what do we call that method?

Synthetic division is a shortcut method for dividing polynomial by a

simple binomial of the form (x-r).
Synthetic division uses only the coefficient of a polynomial.
Example 1. Use synthetic division to divide P(x)= (3x 3 + 4x2 + 8) by (x
+ 2)
1. Arrange the coefficients of P(x) in descending powers of x,
placing 0s for the missing terms. The leading coefficient of
P(x) becomes the first entry of the third row.

2. Place the value of r in the upper left corner. In this example, x

– r = x + 2 = x – (-2), so r = -2.

3. The first number in the 2nd row (-6) is the product of r (-2)
and the number in the third row (3) of the preceding column.
The second number in the third row (-2) is the sum of the two
numbers (4 and -6) above it.

4. Repeat the procedure describe in No. 3 until the last number

in the third row is obtained.

5. Write the quotient Q(x). Note that the degree of Q(x) is one
less than the degree of P(x). the entries in the third row give
the coefficients of Q(x) and the remainder R.
Q(x) = 3x2 – 2x + 4, R = 0

Example 2. Use synthetic division to find the quotient of (x 4 + 8x2 – 5x3

– 2 + 15x) ÷ (x -3)
Solution: by inspection, the dividend is not in standard form, so there
is a need to rearrange the terms of the polynomial. Thus, x4 + 8x2 – 5x3
– 2 + 15x = x4 – 5x3 + 8x2 + 15x – 2.
Then, write the coefficients of the polynomial in the first row. Follow
the steps described in Example 1.

Therefore, the quotient is x3 - 2x2 + 2x + 21 and the remainder is 61.

d. Application Part-near Work
The teacher let the student choose a partner sitting near him/her.
Each pair will try to solve the expression using the synthetic division.
1. (x2 + 3x + 10) ÷ (x + 2)
2. (x2 + x – 2) ÷ (x – 1)
3. (x3 – 54) ÷ (x – 3)
e. Value In what situation can you apply your knowledge about division of
Integration polynomials using synthetic division?
f. Abstraction  What is synthetic division?
 How would you compare long division from synthetic
division?

IV. EVALUATION
A. Divide using synthetic division.
1. (10x3 + 5x2 + 75x - 40) ÷ (2x + 1)
2. (12x3 + 10x2 + 5x + 1) ÷ (3x + 1
3. (4x4 + 5x2 - 6x - 4) ÷ (x – 4)
B. Solve the following problems. Show your complete solutions.
4. If one ream of bond paper costs (3x – 4) pesos, how many reams can you buy for
(6x4 – 17x3 + 24x2 - 34x + 24)?
5. A tailor earns (12y2 + y- 35) pesos for working (3y -5) hours. How much does he
earn per hour?

V. ASSIGNMENT
A. Solve and express in polynomial form.
r
1. If r = 2x3 + 4x2 – x - 6 and s = x – 2. What is ?
s
2. Find the quotient when x3 - 6x2 + 2x + 8 is divided by (x – 3).
3. What must be multiplied to (x2 + 2x + 1) to get (x4 + x3 + x2 + 3x + 2)?
4. Suppose the area of a rectangle is (6x2 – 7x + 14) square units. If its width is (2x
– 5) units, what expression represents its length?
B. Make an advance study and conduct a research on the internet about the Remainder
Theorem and Factor Theorem.
