Introduction to Technology:
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in
industry. It is the knowledge of techniques and processes, which enables us to do our work
efficiently with ease.
Over the last few years, technology has put a great impact with a great speed. Whether it is with
the invention of the telephone or internet, technology is making its way towards development
with each passing day. In the modern day era, the technology works as a catalyst in the business
and corporate world.
Every organization is using the technology as it helps to do the work of the organization in a
better way and even saves the time. The use of technology is increasing day by day, we all
depend on technology and we use various technologies to accomplish specific tasks in our lives.
Technology plays a vital role in enhancing business by promoting their business on the web, on
media and many other sources that technology created. Different companies spread their
branches all over the world and connect with them only with the help of technology. People find
employees with high skills and capabilities through technology. Technology has numerous
positive effects on modern business in this period of time. There are tremendous changes that are
made in old businesses as well as new businesses due to the use of technology. High technology
devices work much faster than old devices and this leads to increase in the income generation of
the business.

Importance of Technology in the Workplace:
Change in time brings changes in technology and with change in technology comes
development. This development through technology has been evident in the business world as
well. The technology has been changing constantly throughout time and with that many
evolutions can be seen in its use in workplace. Workplace refers not only to offices or
organizations, but it is rather a comprehensive term for the whole business world which includes
government offices, industries, organizations, etc.
First and foremost, technology has brought a great change in the communication medium.
Technology presents businesses with various communication tools which include email, visual
communication, mobile phones, internet, etc. A good and interactive communication is the key
for any business to succeed. The improvement of communication channel has led to time saving
in work and operation of business in effective and smooth way. It has helped the worker or staffs
of the organization to do their work jointly which can lead to the better outcome.
Along with communication, technology has brought a huge evolution in the production process
and other factors related to marketing and distribution of goods and services. This has facilitated
in making the businesses profitable and successful.

The Best Ways to Use Technology in the Workplace:
Technology has been criticized for taking up too much of our time and pulling us away from
socialization. There is an abundance of articles on why technology is bad for your health, how it
interrupts intimate conversations, and why we should go back to phones that aren’t “smart”.
However, technology is here to stay and is becoming a bigger and bigger staple as the years go
by.
The use of technology has been increasing day by day in the workplaces and people don’t seem
to get tired of using it for their convenience. It is rare nowadays to get a hardcopy of the minutes
of the meetings, or some report and small reminders. People rather use their smartphones to keep
such records and such records are forwarded to others via mail, and text messages. It is one
instance for how people have now adopted technology in their workplace. The ways by which
technology has been used in the workplace can be discussed under following headings:

Use Technology to Improve Communication:


The modern day communication media such as internet, email, social networking sites,
telephone, etc. are the output of technology. These mediums are very helpful in the workplace as
communication is the key factor of a successful business. Technology helps in creating a
shared information environment at work. In this environment, information is organized
in one central location, allowing anyone at work to access and use it as needed.  This
structure makes the flow of information in a workplace faster and easier.

Technology has made connecting in real time easier than ever. Face timing or video
calling a coworker or an employee saves much time than meeting personally. Similarly,
emailing a document or a report is much more convenient than sending them through
post. These instances help us to make the best use of technology in our workplace.

Use Technology for Team Effort:


Technology can provide you with a hundreds of options when it comes to engaging your
employees and keeping things interesting. First of all, technology reduces the distance between
the employees and the management through effective communication. Thus, its use can be made
to improve the relationship between the management and employees which promotes teamwork
in the workplace. In a similar manner, many software could be used to provide platform for a
charity cause or other similar activities which require team effort. This could be much helpful to
improve relationship within the organization.
Use Technology to Evaluate Performance:
Managing a large number of employees and tracking down their progress can be a tedious job to
do. There are many performance management tools which we can use in order to keep necessary
records about the team. This will be much helpful in order to evaluate the performance of the
employees.
In a similar manner, technology facilitates us to evaluate the performance of our overall business
as well. There are many software and applications which helps us to keep track of our finances,

investments, revenues, etc. which we can use to evaluate the performance of our business as
well.

Use Technology to Stay Organized:


Nowadays, virtual filing is more used than the actual paper filing. We store our data and records
in the computer. Due to the advancement in technology, we have a cloud based sharing tools
such as google drive, dropbox, icloud, etc. These types of tools typically include multiple options
for organizing your documents in an intuitive way, and they also allow you to share files
selectively. These tools can be used in the workplace so as to make easy transfer of files as well
as it helps them to put together a clear and organized filing system on a cloud-based app.
Use Technology for Innovation:
Technology tools not only help information flow, but they also enable innovation at
work. Employees can use technology to suggest and create new ideas that can
transform a business. With tools like the internet, workers can research to find ways to
assist their organization gain a competitive advantage and reach more customers.

Use of Technology in Decision Making:


Since information can be organized through decentralized computing and processed on time,
workers can easily access that data, process it, index it or make changes in existing information
on the database. Business uses IT to support decision-making tasks which are commonly known
as online analytical processing.

Conclusion
Technology has been widely used in the business sectors. Many businesses are using various
business communication technologies to change the way their employees interact and
communicate while at work. Workers have use different business technologies to create
innovative business ideas which can be used in business growth and expansion. Technology in
the workplace changes the way human resource managers do their job. It improves on the
process of screening, recruiting and hiring new employees. Technology has been used to track
performance and productivity of each employee at work. Once employees are aware that they are
being monitored, their productivity will increase. Technology is used to automate various tasks
at work, this automation will guarantee efficiency and will also increase on production at work.
The use of internet and computers to work has eliminated space and time boundaries.
Technological tools like virtual meeting applications save us time.
However, there are so many ways technology can distract employees at work. The use of social
networks at work can cause so much distraction and it affects the productivity of employees.
Also, it is expensive to buy technology and it is also costly to maintain it. Similarly, since most
tasks are automated by technology, many employees become lazy at work, technology kills their
creativity and skills. They won’t put their brains at simple tasks like calculating sales and
tracking inventory as they are being done with computers. Due to the technological
advancements, employees communicate via cell phones, text messages, email or virtual video
conferencing tools. This type of communication technology eliminates face-to-face
communication. Thus, the employees become more reserved and self-centered; they get buried
into their work which can be of great harm to a business.
In conclusion we can say that in this modern day era, technology has affected many aspects of
our lives including work. It has both positive and negative sides as well. But, the positive aspects
of the technology clearly weigh downs its negative aspects. However, we have to make efforts in
order to make the best use of technology in our workplace.
