HISTORY

SLAB STEEL
GIRDER
BRIDGE
As steel technology developed in the
1890s, many Vermont railroads built
through girders and deck girders.
During the 1920s, many plate-girder
bridges, mostly deck girders, were
built along highways. This bridge type
continued to be construction after
WWII and into the early 1960s.

Many of the great landmark
bridges are constructed of steel.
Still, it’s important to note that
steel bridges aren’t just attractive,
they’re generally stronger, safer,
faster to build, require less
maintenance, and are more
flexible, which makes them perfect
for earthquake-prone and high-
wind sites. Steel is also used to
DESIGNERS protect elements on bridges,
including utility infrastructure.
In addition to all this,
environmentalists are more likely
to support the construction of
steel bridges compared to other
types because they’re generally
more sustainable and earth-
friendly.

Characteristics of steel that

make it an attractive option for
bridge builders include its
versatility, cost effectiveness,
longevity, and sustainability.
These qualities allow designers
to develop structures that would
be impossible to build without

COMMON FORM

SLAB STEEL BEAM BRIDGE

Multispan plate girder bridge deck on

concrete piers. Beam bridges , also
known as stringer bridges, are the
simplest structural forms for bridge
spans supported by an abutment or
pier at each end.

Bridge
Are the simplest structural forms
for bridge spans supported by an
abutment or pier at each end. No
moments are transferred
throughout the support, hence
their structural type is known as
simply supported.

UNIVERSITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

STRINGER BRIDGE
The simplest beam bridge could be a log
(see log bridge), a wood plank, or a stone
slab (see clapper bridge) laid across a stream.
Bridges designed for modern infrastructure
will usually be constructed of steel or
reinforced concrete, or a combination of
both. The concrete elements may be
reinforced, prestressed or post-tensioned.
Such modern bridges include girder, plate
girder, and box girder bridges, all types of
beam bridges.

ORTHOGRAPHIC
STEEL BRIDGE
whose deck typically comprises a structural steel deck plate stiffened
either longitudinally or transversely, or in both directions. This allows
the deck both to directly bear vehicular loads and to contribute to the
bridge structure's overall load-bearing behaviour. The orthotropic
deck may be integral with or supported on a grid of deck framing
members such as floor beams and girders

consists of two types, those are
Standard Span ranging from 30

A delta frame is a triangular shaped truss that extends from

the pier up to the bridge girders. The triangular shape allows
the girder to span a longer distance between piers. This
reduces the number of piers required for the bridge, which is
one of the reasons why it could be used on the new Rock
