Hydrocarbon Volume Calculation

Reservoir rocks should have porosity and permeability that allows them to contain a
significant amount of extractable hydrocarbons.

The calculation of hydrocarbon volume requires the knowledge of the volume of the
formations containing hydrocarbons, the porosity of each formation, hydrocarbon saturation
of each formation, the thickness of reservoir rock in the zone (h) that can be generated from
the petrophysical interpretation defining the zone and the area (A) that can be taken from the
seismic data.

The product of area of the reservoir (𝐴) and the reservoir thickness (ℎ) gives the bulk volume
of the reservoir (𝑉𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑘) as seen in the following equation:

Apart of bulk volume of the reservoir, formation factor, both for gas and oil are other
important parameters to be considered in hydrocarbon volume calculation. The formation
volume factor is the ratio of the volume of standard mass of oil at reservoir at stock tank
condition.

 OOIP(STB) = Stock tank original oil in place

 𝐴 = Area of reservoir (Acre)
 ℎ = Height or thickness of pay zone (ft)
 Boi = oil at initial condition (Reservoir bbls/STB)
 𝑆𝑤= Water saturation (%)
 ∅ = Porosity from the log (%)

The OOIP (STB) in the study area was calculated following the steps:
1- Calculation of average net productive thickness of the two pay zones in all wells.
2- Calculation of average effective porosity of the two pay zones in all wells.
3- Calculation of the average water saturation of the two pay zones in all the wells.
4- Calculation of bulk reservoir volume
5- Calculation of stock tank original oil in place

The hydrocarbon volume result of both reservoir zones is xxxxx STB and the recoverable
about xxxxxx STB. In spite of some uncertainties mentioned above, this result is not far from
the actual OOIP.
