Communication Ethics

Direction: The National Communication Association ethical communication boosts the quality of communication in
all forms. So, they endorsed the Credo for Ethical Communication. The Ethical Principles of NCA (1999) are
provided on the first column. Provide your own examples in applying these principles by writing them on the second
column.
Ethical Principles
1. Advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty, and
reason as essential to the integrity of
communication
2. Endorse freedom of expression, diversity of
perspective, and tolerance of dissent to achieve the
informed and responsible decision making
fundamental to a civil society.
3. Strive to understand and respect other
communicators before evaluating and responding
to their messages.
4. Promote access to communication resources and
opportunities as necessary to fulfill human
potential and contribute to the well-being of
families, communities, and society.
5. Promote communication climates of caring and
mutual understanding that respect the unique needs
and characteristics of individual communicators.
6. Condemn communication that degrades
individuals and humanity through distortion,
intimidation, coercion, and violence, and through
the expression of intolerance and hatred.
7. Committed to the courageous expression of
personal convictions in pursuit of fairness and
justice.
8. Advocate sharing information, opinions, and
feelings when facing significant choices while also
respecting privacy and confidentiality.
9. Accept responsibility for the short- and long-term
consequences for our own communication and
expect the same of others.

Examples
We should be concerned with information honesty. As
professionals, public speakers, and students, we should accurately
quote and cite sources of information we use in written and oral
reports. We should avoid plagiarism or copying one's work or speech
without giving credit to it.
We should create a positive environment when working in a
community, in which each participant can feel free to speak up or
share their concepts, emotions, views, beliefs, and feelings. Also, we
must learn to value one's opinion as a listener, and we can strive for a
range of viewpoints because it helps us to be more fully aware of a
subject.
We should learn to understand the views and values of a person
before making a decision. We should make an effort to listen
properly. If we have already heard and understood the point of view
of a speaker, then we can start creating our thoughts on the message.
Before making decisions on how to respond, we must carefully
analyze the arguments within the speech. If one person does not like
the idea, they should still show them respect and kindly listen to them
before critically evaluating their idea or opinions.
In the workplace, people should have access to the phone, email,
and any form of communication necessary to keep in contact with
others.
We should appreciate and interact with people whose cultural
practices are different from our own. When we interact, we should
create an environment of caring and mutual respect. As a public
speaker, we must value each other's characteristics.
Communication should be civil at all times. No one should be
talked down to or degraded in a violent manner. Everyone in the
work place should be treated with the upmost respect.
In our environment, we should avoid inequality and injustices.
All must be able to share their well-founded views and opinions and
to abide by their values and personal beliefs. As young public
speakers, we must stand up for what we consider to be equal and just.
Employees and clients should be comfortable enough with each
other to express how their feeling. The information they disclose
should be kept private to third parties.
Everyone must understand that they are responsible for their
actions and know they will be held accountable for the repercussions
of their actions.
