4. MARKET DYNAMICS | 4.1 DRIVERS

4.1.2 INCREASING DEMAND FOR POLYESTER

 Benzene, which is used in the production of resins, such as polyester (also referred to as PET), is experiencing a stable growth in the market, owing to the continuously
increasing demand for polyester products. The majority of the polyester produced is used to manufacture fibers, small containers, and bottles.

 Bottles used in the packaging of beverages, such as cold drinks, drugs, and syrups, occupy a major share in the global packaging market. The demand for PET bottles is also
expected to increase at a continuous steady pace during the forecast period, owing to the absence of a competitive substitute for PET. The increasing demand for bottled
water and carbonated and packaged drinks is expected to increase the demand for PET bottles over the forecast period.

 Additionally, PET bottles can be recycled and used to make other products. Recycling reduces the amount of waste being added to the environment, thereby, further
promoting the use of PET bottles, owing to such positive attributes.

 The average revenue in bottled water per person has been increasing Y-o-Y, and in 2010, the amount was USD 19.21, which grew gradually till 2015, wherein the revenue
was about USD 29.16. By 2019, the revenue increased to USD 38.85 per person.

 In terms of the soft drinks market, the volume of soft drink products consumed over the world in 2010 was about 300,707 million liter, and it grew to about 323,215 million
liter in 2015. In 2019, approximately 349,115 million liter of soft drink products were consumed around the world.

 Hence, owing to the demand for both packaged drinking water and soft drinks bottles, the demand for PET is expected to increase in the future,

 Polyesters are expeditiously replacing conventional glass bottles and containers in the food and pharmaceutical industry and increasing its presence in interior decoration
applications.

 Furthermore, polyester bottles and containers are replacing conventional metal containers and bottles in the developing countries, owing to its advantages over
conventional bottles, such as low cost, easy to handle, lightweight, unbreakable, wear resistance, and high tensile strength.

 Ease of availability and cost-effectiveness, coupled with population growth and improving living standards, have increased the consumption of polyester fibers over the
years. This is a trend that is expected to continue in the future as well.

 These factors are expected to drive the polyester market, thereby, increasing the consumption of benzene during the study period. However, the recent outbreak of COVID-
19 is expected to have a negative impact on the growth of the global economy, especially in the beverages industry in the short term, and has an adverse effect on the
market studied. However, it is expected to stabilize over the forecast period.

5. MARKET SEGMENTATION | 5.1 DERIVATIVE

5.1.1.1 ETHYLBENZENE
 Ethylbenzene is a highly inflammable colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is majorly used in the manufacturing of styrene. Styrene is used in the production of
various products, such as polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) resins, styrene-butadiene elastomers, latexes, and
unsaturated polyester resins.

 The demand for styrene is continuously increasing in the Middle Eastern and Asia-Pacific regions, owing to the increased demand for rubber tires in the
manufacture of on-road and off-road automobiles and construction machineries.

 Styrene polymers are also used in various products, such as televisions, IT equipment, disposable medical products like test kits, consumer electronics like portable
speakers, cassette tape housing, other parts for televisions, computers, and all types of IT equipment, where the combination of form, function, and aesthetics is
essential and applied in the forms, such as media enclosures and CD and DVD cases.

 Smartphones account for a major share in consumer electronics, with the increasing adoption of smartphones worldwide, especially in the developing economies.

➢ The worldwide smartphone vendors shipped a total of 369.8 million units during the fourth quarter of 2019, which is almost on the same level (-0.9%),
when compared to the 373.1 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2018.

➢ Increase in government taxes on the import of smartphone components has supported the smartphone manufacturers in moving toward local
manufacturing and assembling of smartphones in India. Leading manufacturers, such as Xiaomi and Samsung, have even increased their smartphone
production capacities in India in recent times.

16 SAMPLE – GLOBAL BENZENE MARKET

5. MARKET SEGMENTATION | 5.1 DERIVATIVE

5.1.1.1 ETHYLBENZENE
 In India, technology transitions, such as the rollout of 4G/ LTE networks and IoT (Internet of Things), are driving accelerated adoption of electronics products.
Additionally, initiatives, such as ‘Digital India’ and ‘Smart City’ projects, have raised the demand for IoT in the market, and they are expected to drive the demand
for consumer electronics.

➢ Many television manufacturers, such as LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and Sanyo, are aiming to build their production facilities in India. The government, in 2019,
had removed 5% customs duty imposed on the import of open-cell TV panel, used in the manufacturing of TVs.

➢ In June 2017, LG Electronics Inc., a South Korean conglomerate, announced to design and build its first liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturing facility, by
investing USD 16 billion in India, which currently relies entirely on imports for display panels. The facility started the production of 32- and 43-inch sized
panels in 2018. The company planned to increase the production of the plant in 2019, to produce almost 80% of the panels that are sold in India.

➢ Thus, the increasing robust demand for consumer electronics, such as televisions, laptops, smartphones, and tablets, is anticipated to drive the demand for
polystyrene and ethylbenzene over the forecast period.

 Apart from styrene, ethylbenzene is also used as a solvent in fuels and as an intermediate for other chemical applications. These applications are likely to support
the demand for, and the growth of, the ethylbenzene segment.

 The increasing demand for ethylbenzene from various applications, including polystyrene, is expected to continue in the forecast period.

21 SAMPLE – GLOBAL BENZENE MARKET

5. MARKET SEGMENTATION | 5.2 GEOGRAPHY | 5.2.1 ASIA-PACIFIC

5.2.1.1 CHINA
 In Asia-Pacific, China is the largest economy in terms of GDP. The country witnessed about 6.1% GDP growth in 2019, despite the trade disturbance caused due to its
trade war with the United States. The economic growth rate of China in 2020 was initially expected to be moderate, when compared to the previous year. However, due
to the onset of COVID-19, the economic growth of China currently seems to contract by a considerable extent in 2020. The IMF has cut the country’s GDP growth
forecast to about 1.2%.
 Benzene consumption is dominated by the production of two major derivatives: ethylbenzene and cumene. Benzene is used in a wide range of economic sectors, with
the major sectors being construction, electronics and appliances, packaging, transportation, consumer products, and medical.
 In China, the majority proportion of the benzene is utilized as feedstock for derivatives, that too, in ethylbenzene and cumene. These are further used in the manufacture
of polyesters and styrene. These are the basic pre-requisite for the manufacturing of a wide range of consumer goods.
 China leads in the manufacturing and sales of motor vehicles, which, in turn, leads to higher consumption of direct benzene as fuel additives and in the manufacture of
tire rubber.
 China is the largest importer of benzene, globally, in terms of value and quantity. China registered an import of 1.94 million metric ton of benzene in 2019. With the
growing manufacturing sector and the largest population, all the major end-user industries registered an exceptional rise in the recent past. However, the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on the industry was mainly observed in benzene downstream derivatives, majorly because of logistical constraints.
 Aniline is one of the derivatives of benzene, and the consumption to produce methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) accounts for almost 90% of the total aniline
demand. The reaction of aniline and formaldehyde using hydrochloric acid as a catalyst is the first step to the production of MDI.
 Polyurethanes are produced by combining MDI with polyols and other chemical additives. Since MDI and a wide range of polyols can be used to produce polyurethane
and the speed of the reaction can be adjusted, a broad spectrum of materials, such as PU resin-based coatings and adhesives and sealants, can be produced to meet
specific application needs. And with increasing demand from PU resin-based coatings and adhesives and sealants in the country, the demand for aniline is expected to
increase, and hence, the benzene market in the country is expected to grow.
 Thus, owing to the increasing demand for various direct benzene applications, the demand for benzene is expected to drive the market in the country throughout the
forecast period. Despite the abovementioned factors, the negative impact of COVID-19 halted the production facilities for several months, and as the lockdown eases,
the supply chain throughout the world is expected to be fractured. Hence, the growth in China for benzene is projected to be hindered for a few years before stabilizing.
