Lab 5 Procedure

EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS

 Fine aggregates (Natural sand)

 Coarse aggregates (Gravel)
 Portland cement
 Water
 Concrete mixing tubs
 Slump test molds
 Casting molds (4x8 cylinders)
 Miscellaneous tools

Concrete Hand-mixing:
1) Weigh out the designed proportion of each ingredient. Divide the water into two buckets, one
with about 3/4 of the water.
2) In the mixing tub, mix the fine aggregates and the cement with spade, turning the mixture over
and over again until it is of even color throughout.
3) The coarse aggregates are then added to the sand cement mixture. The mass is mixed by
shoveling and turning over by twist.
4) A hollow is made in the middle of the mixed pile. Carefully add ¾ of the total quantity of
water required while the materials are turned in towards the center with spades. The remaining
water is added in very small increments. Meanwhile, continue mixing until a uniform color and
consistency is obtained throughout the pile.
5) Perform a slump test. If results are satisfactory, skip to the next step, otherwise adjust water
and cement and redo the tests until the desired slump is obtained.
6) Record the final slump and the actual weight of water and cement used.
How to conduct a slump test according to ASTM C143?
1) Dampen the slump test mold and place it on the concrete floor.
2) Fill the mold to 1/3 full by volume and rod the bottom layer with 25 evenly spaced strokes.
3) Fill the mold to 2/3 full and rod the second layer with 25 strokes penetrating the top of the
bottom layer.
4) Fill the mold to full, and rod the top layer with 25 strokes penetrating the top of the second
layer.
5) Strike off excess concrete on the top surface of the mold.
6) Remove the mold carefully in the vertical direction.
7) Immediately invert and place the mold beside the slumped concrete and place the rod
horizontally across the mold, and measure the slump, in inches, to the nearest 1/4 inch.

How to make a concrete specimen according to ASTM C31?

1) Place the casting molds on the concrete floor. Apply motor oil to the inside of the molds.
2) Fill the mold to 1/2 full by volume and rod the bottom layer with 25 strokes evenly spaced.
3) Fill the mold to full and rod the top layer with 25 strokes penetrating the top of the bottom
layer.
4) Tap the sides of the mold lightly to eliminate the voids left by the rod.
5) Strike off excess concrete on the top surface of the mold using a sawing action with the rod.
Take special care to smooth the surface.
6) Cover the cylinders with a cap. Be sure to mark the cylinder caps with your group number,
cylinder number, and date.
7) Carefully move the cylinders to temporary storage.
