The ABM strand

June 19, 2014 - 12:00am Accountancy.

The Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) Strand of the
Academic Track of Senior High School (SHS) has nine
specialization subjects, namely:
Applied Economics
Business Ethics and Social
Responsibility
Fundamentals of Accountancy,
Business, and Management 1
Fundamentals of Accountancy,
Business, and Management 2
Business Math
Business Finance
Organization and Management
Principles of Marketing
Career Advocacy / Culminating Activity
It should be remembered that these subjects have different content
and competencies, which will be determined by the circumstances of
the students, the school, and the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
in which the students are most likely to enroll.
The idea that “one size fits all” has been abandoned by the
Department of Education (DepEd). A lot of leeway is given to Senior
High Schools, since the main and really the only reason that two
years were added to basic education is to prepare students for their
future lives. It makes no sense to force a student to follow a
predetermined curriculum if s/he has something else in mind for
herself or himself.
How are these subjects related to the course that the students will
At the University of the Cordilleras, a first-year college student takes
Accounting 101 (Accounting Orientation), a one-unit course that is a
general introduction to accounting. After a student takes the two
Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business, and Management
specialization subjects in SHS, there will no longer be any need for
this college course. There should also be no need for him or her to
take Accounting 1/2 (Fundamentals of Accounting, Part I).
There will also be no need for Management 1 (Principles of
Management), another college freshman subject. There will still be a
need, however, for him or her to take Accounting 3/4 (Fundamentals
of Accounting, Part II), which has content over and above that in the
SHS subjects.
Since the General Education Curriculum (GEC) has been revised,
there will also be no need for the student to take other subjects listed
in the first-year curriculum, such as English 01 (Communication
Skills Part I), English 02 (Communication Skills Part 2), Filipino 1
(Komunikasyon sa Akademikong Filipino), Filipino 2 (Pagbasa at
Pagsulat Tungo sa Pananaliksik), Mathematics 1 (College Algebra),
History 1 (Philippine History with Government and Constitution),
and Natural Science 1 (Physical Science).
All of these subjects are now in the K to 12 curriculum and have
been rightly removed from the GEC. Oral Communication, Reading
and Writing, Komunikasyon at Pananaliksik sa Wika at Kulturang
Pilipino, Pagbasa at Pagsusuri ng Iba’t Ibang Teksto Tungo sa
Pananaliksik, General Mathematics, and Physical Science are SHS
core subjects. Philippine History is taken up starting Grade 1 in
Araling Panlipunan. The removal of duplication of subjects in the
curriculum is one of the major advantages of the K to 12 reform.
Slain student Atio Castillo laid to rest

MANILA, Philippines — Slain law student Horacio "Atio"
Castillo III was laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon at the
Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque, amid continuing probe on
his apparent fatal hazing.
Atio, a 22-year-old University of Santo Tomas first year law
student, is believed to be a victim of hazing of Aegis Juris
Fraternity. His body was discovered sprawled on a sidewalk at
Balut, Tondo in the morning of September 17. His body,
covered in a blanket when found, sustained contusions in the
upper arms and candle burn marks.
Friends and family of Atio, including their pet Lega that was
wearing a specialized shirt with Atio's face on it, also attended
the funeral mass at the Sanctuario de San Antonio Parish,
Makati City.
John Paul Solano claimed that he only discovered Atio’s body
in Tondo and brought it to the Chinese General Hospital. It was
later found out that Solano is a member of the Aegis Juris
Fraternity. He is now being eyed as one of the primary suspects
in the case of Atio.
Solano went into hiding after news broke out of Atio’s death.
He resurfaced and surrendered to authorities on September 22,
through the Office of Sen. Panfilo Lacson.
Solano said he is willing to “tell all” on what he knows on
killing of Atio but he held back when the Manila Police District
and Atio’s parents—Horacio Jr. and Carmina—on Monday
filed murder, anti-hazing, robbery, perjury and obstruction of
justice raps against him.
Paterno Esmaquel, Solano’s lawyer and among the founding
members of Aegis Juris, manifested that his client is being
illegally detained. He stressed in his filed Omnibus Motion that
Solano surrendered and should therefore not be subjected to an
inquest proceeding.
Following the burial of the victim, the Department of Justice
has ordered Solano released.
In an executive session with Senate committee on public order,
Solano divulged names of six of his fraternity brothers who had
a hand in Atio’s death.
He added that he will tell everything that he knows in his
affidavit to be submitted to the Department of Justice, but he
has yet to execute one.
Solano and 15 other members of Aegis Juris are also facing
murder, anti-hazing, and robbery complaints from the Manila
police.
Ralph Trangia, also a primary suspect, has reportedly fled the
country to Chicago on September 19. His father, Antonio, is
facing murder, anti-hazing, and robbery complaint, while his
mother, Rosemarie, is facing obstruction of justice rap.
