Exercise 2

Optics

Section: Lens Equation

1. From the lens equation calculate the position of the following images produced by a
convex lens. Draw a ray diagram in each case and state whether the images are real or
virtual, and also if they are upright or inverted!
a) h = 6cm, f = 2cm
b) h = 10mm, f = 15mm

Section: Thin Lens

2. A point source S is located on the axis of, and 40 cm from, a plano-convex thin lens.
Suppose that the glass lens is immersed in air (n = 1.5) and that it has a radius of 6 cm.
Determine the location of the image:
a. When flat surface is toward s
b. When the curved surface is toward S.
3. An object 8.0 cm high is placed 12.0 cm to the left of a converging thin lens having a
focal length of 8.0 cm. A second converging lens having a focal length of 6.0 cm is
placed 36.0 cm to the right of the first lens, on the same optical axis. Find the position,
size and orientation of the image produced by the combination of the two lenses.
4. A compound lens consist of two thin bi-convex lenses (L1 and L2) of focal length 10
cm and 20 cm respectively, separated by a distance of 100 cm. Describe the image
corresponding to a 5 cm tall object 15 cm from the first lens (L1).

Section: Thick Lens

5. A double convex lens has radii of 10 cm and 20 cm, a thickness 2mm, and an index of
3/2.
a. Locate the principal and focal points.
b. Compute the image distance for object 16.4 in front of first lens
c. Dtermne the Front Focal Length (FFL) and back Focal Length (BFL)
