Geometrical optics: Tutorial-1

1. A thin bi-convex lens with radius of curvature of left and right faces equal to
|R1 | = 20 cm and |R2 | = 25 cm respectively is placed such a way that there is
water on left side and air on right side of the lens. Evaluate first and second
focal length of the lens.
2. Two convex lens of focal lengths 20 cm and 10 cm are separated by distance 5
cm. Find all the cardinal points for combination of lenses.
3. An object is placed at x = 0. A convex lens of focal length 20 cm is placed at
x = 30 cm, and a concave lens of focal length 10 cm is placed at x = 35 cm.

(a) Find the position of image using lens formula ( v1 − 1

u = f1 ) multiple times.
(b) Find the position of image using cardinal points evaluated in Q. No. 2.

4. Mark all the cardinal points and position of object obtained in Q. No. 3 on a
graph paper and draw an exact ray diagram to find position of the image. Use
graph sheet for this purpose. Verify that the image is created at the point same
as obtained in Q. No. 3.
5. Two convex lens of focal lengths 20 cm and 10 cm are separated by a distance
of 5 cm. The space between the lenses is filled with water. Find the focal length
of the combination of lenses.
6. A thin convex lens of focal length 20 cm and a thin concave lens of focal length
−10 cm are situated 5 cm apart from each other. An object is placed at distance
of 25 cm from the convex lens as shown in figure. Find the position of the image.

7. Find the cardinal points of a thick convex lens, made of glass, having its curved
surfaces 2 cm apart with magnitude of curvature of its first and second surface
being equal to |R1 | = 30 cm and |R2 | = 40 cm respectively.

8. Find cardinal points of a glass sphere of radius R. If an object touches the

sphere, where is the position of the corresponding image.

9. An object is placed at x = 0 (Point O). A thin convex lens of focal length 20 cm

is placed at x = 25cm (Point A) and a thick convex lens is placed such that its
first surface lies at x = 30 (Point B)and second surface lies at x = 32 (Point C).
The magnitude of radius of curvature of first and second surface are |R1 | = 30
cm and |R2 | = 40 cm. Find the position of the image. Both lenses are made of
glass. You can use the results obtained in Q.No. 7.
