(a) Briefly discuss type of stresses in a soil and draw a diagram that shows the different of
stress distribution.
(5 marks)

(b) A pole carries a vertical load carries a vertical load of 200kN. Determine the vertical stress
increase at a depth 5m (a) directly below the pole and (b) at a radial distance of 2m.
(15 marks)

(c) A vertical load of 200kN was distributed by a shallow foundation of 2m x 3m into a 5-

meter depth as in diagram 1. Obtain an additional pressure for each soil layer and draw a
stress distribution diagram due the load.
