Constructive learning : E-tivity Assignment-III

VALIDATING A DIRECTION ADOPTED IN A BASIC DESIGN STUDIO BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES
OF CONSTRUCTIVISM

In this mixed methodology research, the data collection method used is EXPERIMENTAL.
Experimental data collection is used to test a causal relationship. In this research paper, the
author has introduced to a group of architectural students who are in the 1st semester of their
architecture education, a new method (constructivist pedagogy) of evolving a design solution to
a problem. This constructivist problem consists of informal activities and design tasks
introduced in a sequential manner before the actual design task is exposed.
The experimental data collection method aims at finding out if the constructivist pedagogy will
improve the creative spirit, encourages curiosity, complexity, skills, explores design process and offers
a unique learning experience. Experimental data collection is done by altering one variable (i.e.
altering the method of teaching) to find the effect it has on the other. (i.e. improved results)

A REVIEW ON UPCYCLING: CURRENT BODY OF LITERATURE, KNOWLEDGE GAPS AND A WAY

FORWARD

The data collection method used in this research is ARCHIVAL research. This research is used to
understand current or historical events, conditions or practices. This paper analyses and
summarises the current body of literature on upcycling, focusing on different definitions, trends
in practices, benefits, drawbacks and barriers in a number of subject areas, and gives
suggestions for future research by illuminating knowledge gaps in the area of upcycling. The
data is collected from publications found through digital academic databases including Elsevier,
Emerald, Google Scholar, IEEE, Metapress, Scopus, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Web of Science,
and Wiley. A search keyword combination of “upcycle” or “upcycling” was used to identify
literature relating to the topic. The search results were 297 in number dating from 1994 to
2014. They were further screened to 48 by reading the abstracts of all 297 publications.
Thematic analysis was done on the qualitative data obtained from the selected publications
which includes coding and identifying the common themes followed by elaborate analysis
under each theme.
