Assignment 10

A microbiologist would like to test the antimicrobial properties of the

plant extracts from malunggay, papaya, and guava on the following
microbes: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae.
She used the disk-diffusion method wherein sterilized filter paper disks
soaked with the plant extracts were placed onto the microbes’ growing
media. After incubating the microbes for 48 hours, she then measured
the diameter of the zones of inhibition around the disks.
Diameters of zones
of inhibition
She made 5 replicates per plant extract per microbe.
The following were her raw data.
Malunggay Extract Guava Extract

E. coli – 20mm, 22mm, 18mm, 21mm, 23mm E. coli – 20mm, 23mm, 20mm, 19mm, 22mm

S. aureus – 14mm, 12mm, 14mm, 13mm, 15mm S. aureus – 19mm, 18mm, 21mm, 14mm, 15mm

V. cholerae - 8mm, 9mm, 8mm, 8mm, 9mm V. cholerae - 25mm, 24mm, 30mm, 28mm, 28mm
1. Formulate hypotheses that are
Papaya Extract relevant to the problem.
2. Input the data in Excel using
E. coli – 17mm, 15mm, 15mm, 14mm, 16mm appropriate format/arrangement.
S. aureus – 18mm, 20mm, 17mm, 22mm, 21mm 3. Test your null hypothesis at 5%
significance by using the appropriate
V. cholerae - 8mm, 8mm, 8mm, 8mm, 9mm ANOVA.
4. State your conclusion.
