BBC Three Online ‘Make me think’

Confidence
Matthew Simpson

Outline of Production:
It follows a character, Scott, who is self-conscious and socially anxious. He tries to approach
and talk to somebody but can’t find the courage. When he is at home he finds an article on
ways to improve your confidence and combat anxiety and depression. He then tries to do a
push up but cannot do one. We then see his transformation as he begins to exercise more and
more. He begins to take more steps towards the people he is trying to talk to. Eventually he is
doing many push ups, showing his progression and how exercise
has helped him. In the end he walks up to the people and
introduces himself, having now gained the confidence to
do so.

Order:
Scott is sat by himself in a classroom. He looks
over at some people across the room, goes to stand
up but can’t find the courage to go over and talk to
them, so sits back down.
Then he is back at home, looking at ways to
improve your confidence. The article recommends
exercise. He tries to do a push up but fails to do one.
There is then a montage where we see him begin to
exercise, and as he does he takes more and more steps
towards the people across the room. In the end we see him
doing many push ups in a row intercut with shots of him getting closer to the
people. Eventually he reaches them and says “Hi”.

The production targets the chosen audience by: (according to research and focus
groups)
Demonstrating a way to help alleviate the symptoms of mental health issues. People said in
my surveys that exercise left them feeling refreshed and that exercise had helped with their
self-confidence.
