Shea Parsons Joint Venture (SPJV), our contractor partner, made great progress on the installation of precast structural
concrete beams that support the top deck of the Receiving Lift Station (RLS) shaft. e beams span approximately 66 feet
and are about 3 feet wide. ey were installed in pairs to support the top deck/roof and to provide additional structural
support to the RLS shaft.
Work on the RLS roof deck continues this month with installation of structural steel supports between those precast beams
and the second pass wall. Reinforcing bars and concrete placement will complete the RLS shaft roof deck.

Salus began mining from the launch shaft towards the SVCW plant after a planned stoppage. during the final stop, Barnard-
Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) disassembled the launch cradle and made modifications to the launch shaft in preparation for
Salus’ continuous mining. BBJV installed a drive unit and muck conveyor system within the shaft to haul the muck from
the face of Salus’ cutting tool to the launch shaft. e drive unit pulls a continuous conveyor belt and transfers the muck
from this conveyance system to the ground surface, thus removing muck from the shaft. e last thing BBJV installed was
the California switch, which allows rail cars to pass each other in the tunnel to promote efficient movement of supply
materials in and out of the tunnel.
Safety is emphasized at all stages of the continuous mining process. BBJV conducts daily tunnel taskforce meetings and
works closely with SVCW to monitor ground settlement. BBJV staff visit stations in the tunnel and on the TBM to monitor
the safety equipment, review safety equipment operations, and practice mine safety rescues on a regular basis.
As of October 19, Salus mined 1,787 feet from the launch shaft and built 351 rings.

New Oral Mouth Swab Test Available

for FREE in San Mateo County
In October, the County of San Mateo announced that no-cost
testing for COVId-19 is now available for children ages five and
older. is new testing represents a change in the county’s testing
approach in that you no longer need to be exhibiting symptoms in
order to be tested. San Mateo County is partnering with Curative
Inc. to provide the testing, which involves a simple-to-use oral
mouth swab test that is self-administered. Families can go together
and get tested if they wish. Curative will bill a family’s insurance
for the test. If the family does not have insurance, the county will
cover the cost. You can find more information about the testing
program and make an appointment by visiting the website:

Disaster Preparedness in the Shores
Redwood Shores is basically an island. We live in a community
that is physically separated from our Belmont, San Carlos, and
Redwood City neighbors by water on three sides and a multi-lane
freeway on the fourth. Our access to the outside world uses two
overpasses that could be inaccessible in a large scale disaster.
ese simple facts mean that all Shores residents should plan for
such emergency events as though we will be without the most basic
services for some period of time, possibly a week or more.

The First Thanksgiving
(No, I mean the FIRST anksgiving)
St. Mark’s Corner by Richard Watkins
We all know the story. e Pilgrims came in 1620. Most of them
died over the winter. e Native Americans showed up in the
spring of 1621 and taught them a thing or two about farming.
ey had lots of corn by the fall. ey shot some turkeys, had a

It’s a nice story, but it’s not exactly true. ey didn’t eat turkey.
ere is no indication that it took place on a ursday, nor for

Pick up and Drop Off Materials at
Redwood Shores Branch Library Soon!
A Message from Library Director Derek Wolfgram
Redwood City Public Library knows that Redwood Shores
residents have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to pick up
and drop off library materials at the Redwood Shores Branch
Library, and we are pleased to announce the launch of holds pickup
services and outdoor bookdrop access beginning on december 1.
Because of staffing constraints related to safety protocols and City
of Redwood City essential services, with all Library staff members
teleworking every other week, we have only been able to staff the
downtown Library curbside service. However, we have identified
a staffing plan to ensure continued physical distance and reducing
contact between various staff groups, while also expanding our
services to neighborhood branches.
Redwood Shores holds pickup services will be available on
Tuesdays from 3pm to 7pm and ursdays from 10am to 2pm.
ese services will be provided through the entrance near the
Community Room, not from the main entrance. Holds pickup will
be by appointment, following the practices described online at
www.redwoodcity.org/departments/library/events/curbside-pick-up.
In addition, returned materials will be accepted in the bookdrop
on Curbside Service days from 10:15am to 6:45pm on Tuesdays
and 9:15am to 5:45pm on ursdays. Because of the challenge
of COVId-19 cleaning protocols for conveyor belts, the
automated return system will not be operating. Customers
should use the drive up bookdrop near the main front doors.
Holds pickup services and the bookdrop will be closed on ursday,
december 24 and ursday, december 31, which are City holidays.
In addition, in response to community requests, the Library has
extended our WiFi coverage to provide better access to the
community while our libraries are closed. WiFi at Redwood Shores
Branch Library covers the parking lot on the Community Rooms
side of the building. Our WiFi networks are available at all
locations from 6am to 11pm each day. We have notified the
Belmont-Redwood Shores School district and design Tech High
School of this expansion and asked them to help spread the word
to students and their families.
Of course, our branch service plans are dependent on a safe, healthy
environment for staff and customers. If community transmission
of COVId-19 increases significantly and public health orders from
San Mateo County Health change, we will adjust our branch
service plans accordingly. In conjunction with other City facilities
and neighboring Library jurisdictions, we still plan to keep our
facilities closed to the public until some time in 2021.
