GRAVITY PIPELINE
SVCW’s contractor partner, Barnard-Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV), installed the excavation support system, or secant piles, for the vertical
access shaft being constructed at the San Carlos Pump Station. This vertical shaft will be used to build the connecting structure between
receiving the raw wastewater flows from the Cities of Belmont and San Carlos to the Gravity Pipeline, and then carried to the wastewater
treatment plant. Creating a ring, 24 secant piles were installed. This allows BBJV to excavate soil from within the enclosed secant piles to
build a vertical shaft, which will be about 50 feet deep.

Tunnel Shaft at Inner Bair Island

SALUS continues to be on target for its alignment and tunneling schedule during its current, second drive. BBJV and SVCW continuously
monitor tunneling activities, and teams review proactive measures to ensure that tunneling operations are conducted safely.
In the tunnel that SALUS dug during her first drive, BBJV is installing the first segments of the Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) pipe.
This pipe will ultimately carry the raw wastewater to the SVCW plant. A custom designed pipe transporter was commissioned at the Bair
Island site to operate inside the tunnel. It will transport 20-foot long, 13,000 pound FRP pipe segments that will connect with fabricated
joints to other pipe segments in a sequential process within the tunnel.
BBJV installed cradles that act as supports for the pipe to prepare the shaft for receiving pipe segments as they’re lowered into the shaft. The
pipe segments are supported in the tunnel during construction with metal jacks around each FRP segment. Wooden cradle pieces are used
as temporary supports under each segment prior to placing the final grout that will fill the space between the pipe and concrete tunnel walls.
The grout will only be added after the FRP pipe is placed and secured throughout the entire length of the tunnel. Adding the grout will
create a unified system of concrete segments and FRP carrier pipe that will be resilient during seismic activities. The tunnel will have the
durability of a 100-year service life, which is a primary design criteria for the RESCU Program.
Connections between the pipe segments are custom designed with gaskets that provide a water tight seal. The connection joints are then
tested with controlled air pressure to ensure that the pipe joints are tight and meet the design specifications for long-term performance.
Keep up to date with where SALUS is at here: http://www.svcw-rescu.org/gravity-pipeline

PUMP STATION IMPROVEMENTS

Work underway in December included starting repairs to the concrete JUNCTION BOXES located along the 33-inch reinforced concrete
pipeline (RCP). This pipeline carries raw wastewater from the Menlo Park Pump Station (MPPS) towards the SVCW treatment plant.
After 45 years in service, the four junction boxes require some rehabilitation. Junction boxes act as inspection points along a pipeline to
determine the pipeline’s existing condition and its remaining useful life.
Shea Parsons Joint Venture is preparing to start construction on the BELMONT GRAVITY PIPELINE, which includes use of a micro-tunnel
boring machine (MTBM). Micro-tunneling will be conducted below Shoreway Road from the Belmont Pump Station to the San Carlos
Pump Station. Within the tunnel that the MTBM creates, a 36-inch fiberglass reinforced polymer gravity pipeline will be installed. This
construction method was chosen to minimize disruption to traffic for the public and adjacent businesses.

Be Kind — Don’t Rewind!
by Meenakshi Tripathy
They say everyday is a learning day. So here’s what 2020 has
taught me...
I’ve learned that I’m not the type of a person who wakes up early
in the AM to do BollyX or Yoga. I am however the type of person
who wakes up early in the morning to drink my ginger chai and
mindlessly clear the clutter in my inbox (mostly scammers...) and
scroll through social media (I am addicted to cute dog videos on
Facebook). Don’t get me wrong I do get my workout in but it’s
usually in the evenings... dance and yoga and if I get both in
together, that’s definitely a win!
I’ve learned that I’m not the type of person who bakes delicious
looking sourdough bread. I am, however, the type of person who
loves loves a cheesy grilled cheese sandwich made with said
sourdough bread… so grateful to the Farmer’s Market for keeping
me well-stocked in that department (#go local).
I’ve learned that I’m not the type of a person that goes for a socially
distanced run on the Bay trails. I am, however the type of a person
who likes a leisurely stroll on the trails with
the puppy, taking pictures of the beautiful
blue heron and the graceful leopard sharks.
I am so glad my puppy has small legs and
doesn’t move very fast or very far… so we get
the chance to just take in the views together.
I’ve learned that though every day might feel like “groundhog day” by Monique Seibel
- mundane and monotonous, but I enjoy the time with family,
the peace and quiet without the hustle of commute, constant
parties and school activities. I don’t feel this incessant need to be
outside constantly busy. I have broken my life into the bits and
pieces that make sense for now: Family, Work, Working Out and
building my mental resilience (it’s a marathon not a sprint!)
Let’s face it this year hasn’t exactly turned out how any of us hoped
or mapped out on our vision boards in 2019. However my
biggest learning in 2020 has been two things “focus on what I can
control” and “don’t dwell on the months lost to this pandemic”.
We can do this. We ARE doing this everyday day by day...

We agree, Santa. Technology is amazing. Have you seen, on
TV, drones delivering items?
I have seen drones, the commercial version. We have toy drones up
here, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Commercial drones are fast,
for sure, but Dasher, Dancer, Vixen and the rest of our reindeer team
are up to speed, too. So… for the foreseeable future, we’ll be continuing

I totally understand, Santa. Tell us more about the recent

Well, like Christmases past, good kids around the world, were
adapting to sheltering in place and attending school, remotely. We’ve
seen a slight decline in bullying. Maybe because bullying, remotely,
is more difficult. But, at the same time, we’re seeing an uptick in Photo: Looking south at the intersection of El Camino Real and Crystal

Adults?
Yeah, sadly so. Folks are really fired up about lots of things, these
days. They just need to chill, a bit. That’s an un-Santa way of
describing things, I suppose, but – hey! – we’re pretty cool, up here!

Bechamel Sauce (Basic Recipe) Serves 4 at LaVitaSaporita.com. Email questions, comments,
¼ cup butter or story requests to heyg@lavitasaporita.com.
¼ cup all purpose flour
2-¼ cup milk
Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (allegedly optional
but if you ask me, it’s mandatory)
Salt and pepper to taste
Melt the butter in a heavy bottomed pan over medium heat.
Whisk in the flour. Pour in all the milk, stirring constantly until
it starts to boil. Season with salt, lower the heat, cover and simmer
gently, stirring occasionally, for at least 20 minutes. Remove the
pan from heat. Taste and add more salt (or whatever you think it
needs) if necessary, and season with pepper and nutmeg.
If the sauce is too thick, add a bit more milk. If it’s too runny, return
to the heat and add a pat of butter mixed with an equal quantity of
flour. For a richer sauce, substitute half the milk with heavy cream.
For a lighter sauce, add half milk and half water.
