How Ilangilang Got its Name

Exposition

In the town of Tayabas, the prettiest was Ilang.  She was adored by suitors who promised her all the
comforts of life but she gave her heart to a poor farmer named Edo.

Conflict

Ilang’s parents did not like Edo.  They did not want their beautiful daughter to marry a poor farmer and
so they forbade her to see Edo.  They told her to choose a husband among her rich suitors.

Rising Action

One day, her father followed her when she went to fetch water.  He saw Edo waiting near the stream.
That was the last time Ilang and Edo saw each other.

Climax

She refused to eat and became sick.  She would rather die than marry one of her rich suitors.She
thought only of Edo as she got weaker and weaker.  Before she died, she begged her parents to bury her
at the edge of the forest near the stream.  She wanted to rest in the place where she and Edo met.

Denoument

how happy he was visiting Ilang’s grave and the tree.One morning, the people woke up to the scent of
perfume.  It came from the edge of the forest near the stream.  They went to look for the source of the
scent and found the strange leaflike blossoms of the tree.  Then, they noticed Edo crumpled at the foot
of the tree and crying, “Ilang, Ilang, Ilang …”

Resolution

Edo died that morning.  The people remembered his last words and from then on called the tree and its
fragrant flowers ilang-ilang.

The Legend of Dumaguete


Exposition

The story dates back to the distant past. It was the glorious and chivalrous time of the Spanish senores
and the Moros.

Conflict

 the moros plundering the neighboring islands, abducting the women and the children, who, were told,
were being ground and minted into money and gold by the Moros.

Rising Action

These plundering grew very intense in some nearby islands and there were terrible rumors that these
moros were coming to Dumaguete. It was not called ”dumaguete” then. . The families gathered at night
to pray to the nuestra senora and to santa catalina to deliver them from this danger. The people had the
special devotion to santa catalina and santa plight, she was swift I giving them her protection.

Climax

Every time the moros intended invading the island she would send a swarm of of bees to cover the
whole place, so that it would be seen from a far as a big cloud, swallowing the island into the bosom of
the horizon; so the moros could not find the island.

Denoument

Moros could not not go near to the island because of the fear the bees could attack them and because
of that,they were not able to daguit(meaning to abduct).

Resolution

In other words the people were’dili-na-daguit”(meaning not to abducted.Years passed by the island was
known as Dumaguete.

The Legend of Mayon Volcano


Exposition

Long ago, along the streams of Yawa river lays  a kingdom named Rawis. It is reigned by a very generous 
and intelligent king - King  Makusog.  His only daughter was called "Daragang Magayon" (beautiful maid
en) because of the exceptional beauty that she possesses.
Conflict

Not for long, the two became  inseparable lovers and their relationship was happily blessed by King  Ma
kusog. Ulap asked permission from his lady love to go home to Laguna and fetch his relatives for the pa
mamanhikan  (prenuptial get together).  He was away for two months.

Rising Action

 This news enraged
Patugo and brought back the pain incurred by Daragang Magayon's refusal of his love proposal. 

He convinced his people to set a battle against the Kingdom of Rawin by telling them that Daragang Mag
ayon's marriage to a foreign man is an insult to their maleness.  They agreed to capture King Makusog a
nd ask for Daragang Magayon as a ransom. 

Climax

Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Rawis is busy in the preparation for the arrival of the people from Laguna. T
his  was used by Patugo and his army as an opportunity to attack them. The people of Rawis was so stun
ned by this sudden attack that the king was effortlessly captured.
As the two passionately embraced each other, a deadly arrow came flying from one of the enemies and 
struck their entwined bodies. The sky was covered with gloom as the two lovers slowly fell on the groun
d.

Denoument

The whole Kingdom of Rawis grieved upon their loss. King Makusog proclaimed that the two shall be bur
ied together since it is not right to separate what death has united as one. 

Resolution

 It is said that because of the strong love of Daragang Magayon for Ulap,  her grave mounted into a towe
ring mass of volcano as if an emblem of her undying love. Raging lava even came out of it as a symbol of 
her overflowing affection. This volcano which surfaced from the grave of Daragang Magayon is now kno
wn as the Mayon volcano. Daragang Magayon is what they claim as the Mayon.
