Subject: Chemistry
Class XII
Q.1 A group of students, while on excursion trip is camping in the hills. One morning, they find themselves
engulfed in a thick blanket of snow. One of the senior member of the group suggests to sprinkle common
salt on the ice slit covering the pavement.
Answer the following questions:
(i) What is the purpose of sprinkling common salt on ice slit?
(ii) Can we use any other substance in place of common salt?
(iii) What values are associated with the phenomenon?

Ans. (i) When common salt is sprinkled on icy roads, ice/snow starts melting from the surface because
freezing point of water is lowered. The softened ice/snow can be easily cleared from the roads.
(ii) Calcium chloride can be used in place of common salt. It can lower the freezing point up to –55°C.
(iii) In the hills icy roads can be cleared by spreading common salt or CaCl 2 over snow and thus, traffic is
easily restored in hilly areas.

Q.2 During the construction of some public building, the contractor intends to fix iron frames for windows and
railings to reduce the cost of construction. After due considerations, it is finally recommended to use
aluminum frames for windows and steel railings instead of iron.
Answer the following questions:
(i) As a chemist, do you agree with the new recommendations.
(ii) Give two reasons for your choice.
(iii) What values are associated with the decision?

Ans (i) Yes, the new recommendations are more appropriate in the light of long-term benefit.
(ii) Iron grills and railings are more prone to corrosion which causes damage to the construction gradually.
Aluminium and steel are relatively safer in this respect.
(iii) Knowledge of corrosion/rusting of iron and its prevention makes is aware of its proper application in
construction work so as to avoid damage and accidents.

Q.3 A message is always displayed at the traffic signals, which reads “Stop the vehicle engine at the red lights
to save the fuel”.
Answer the following questions:
(i) Why it is recommended to stop the vehicle engine at the red light signals?
(ii) As a student of chemistry, suggest the chemical process associated with the vehicle engine on.
(iii) What are the values associated with this message?
(iv) Will you support the message displayed by the government or consider it to be violation of human
driving rights?
Ans (i) It is recommended to stop the vehicle engine at the red light signals in order to minimize the emissions
of highly poisonous gases like CO, NO etc., from the automotive exhaust.
(ii) With the vehicle engine on, the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuel carbon monoxide and
nitric oxide is produced.
(iii) Value: Reducing environment pollution, a need of the hour, a concern for environmental protection.
(iv) Will support government’s move. The move is for the common good.
Q.4 A boy argues with his sister not to use nail polish and nail polish remover as frequently as it is poisonous.
His sister rubbishes his arguments stating that all women polishing their nails to beautify.
Answer the following questions:
(i) Is the brother of the girl justified in his arguments?
(ii) As a student of chemistry what do you think could be reason for such a suggestion?
(iii) Suggest two activities to promote these values.

Ans (i) The brother of the girl is justified in his arguments because Nail polish contains two most common
chemicals i.e., formaldehyde and toluene. Both are toxic substances and are carcinogenic compounds
(cancer producing compounds).
(ii) (a) The frequent use may expose to cancer risk.
(b) Breathing in toluene irritate eyes, throat and lungs.
(iii) Spreading awareness about the risk of cancer.
Q.5 At a sweet shop in Hyderabad, Rishi bought some sweets. He requested the sales boy to put the sweets in
a polythene bag. The sales boy refused to do so, instead he kept the sweet box in a paper bag. After
reading the above passage, answer the following questions.
i)Why did the sales boy refuse to put the sweet box in a polythene bag?
ii)As a student of chemistry, why would you advocate the use paper bags instead of polythene bags?
Which value is promoted through the use of paper bag?
iii)suggest two activities to promote these values

Ans i) Polythene is banned because of being non-degradable

ii) Use of polythene bags results in pollution as polythene is non-biodegradable
value: Reducing environmental pollution , concern for environmental protection
iii) Organising mass campaigns for spreading awareness/ use of mass media to educate people

sugar free in sweets. Lakshmi too is diabetic. She controls her sugar level in diet by using less sugar and
by exercising.
a.)Who is able to handle diabetes more efficiently and why?
b.)What value do you derive from this?
c.) What are the harmful effects of artificial sweeteners?
d.)Give any one example of an artificial sweetener.

Exercise keeps one fit and fine.
b.) It is necessary to lead a disciplined life.
c.) Researches have shown that the artificial sweeteners have harmful effect on the body because they are
not excreted easily.
d) Anyone artificial sweetner

Q.7 Shanti, a domestic helper of Mrs. Anuradha, fainted while mopping the floor. Mrs. Anuradha immediately
took her to the nearby hospital where she was diagnosed to be severely ‘anaemic’. The doctor prescribed
an iron rich diet and multivitamins supplement to her. Mrs. Anuradha supported her financially to get the
medicines. After a month, Shanti was diagnosed to be normal.
After reading the above passage, answer the following questions:
(i) What values are displayed by Mrs. Anuradha?
(ii) Name the vitamin whose deficiency causes ‘pernicious anaemia’.
(iii) Give an example of a water soluble vitamin.

Ans (i) Antacid/antihistamine.

(ii) Synthetic detergents
(iii) 0.2% phenol.
Q.8 After the ban on plastic bags, students of one school decided to make the people aware of the harmful
effects of plastic bags on environment and Yamuna River. To make the awareness more impactful, they
organised rally by joining hands with other schools and distributed paper bags to vegetable vendors,
shopkeepers and departmental stores. All students pledged not to use polythene bags in future to save
Yamuna River.
After reading the above passage, answer the following questions:
(i) What values are shown by the students?
(ii) What are biodegradable polymers? Give one example.
(iii) Is polythene a condensation or an addition polymer?

Ans (i) Concern towards water pollution, concern for environmental protection, team work, socially aware.
(ii) The polymers which can be broken into small segments by enzyme catalysed reactions or to some
extent by oxidation over a period of time are called biodegradable polymers. The required enzymes are
produced by microorganism e.g., poly-β-hydroxybutyrate-co-β-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV), nylon-2-nylon-6
etc.
(iii) Polyethene is an addition polymer.

Q.9 Vinod did not like the costlier brand of dish washer because she was not satisfied by using less quantity of
the dishwasher, so she bought the cheaper brand of dish washer and used large amounts of it.
a. As a student of chemistry what would you advise vinod to use?
b. Why? Explain.
c. What value did you impart to Vinod?

a. I would advise Vinod to use smaller quantities of the costlier detergent.

Ans b. Vinod was pouring detergents into the drain. These detergents are not biodegradable. Branched
detergents are highly nondegradable because the microbes cannot attack it. Straight chain detergents are
being prepared these days to reduce the pollution problem. The costlier detergent contains straight chain
hydrocarbon.
c. The value imparted was to use environmentally friendly

1 clean. Geeta , his niece, suggested that he wash the clothes in warm water. Washing of clothes with soaps
or detergents is easier in Luke warm water than cold water.
a. Why?
b. What value do you derive from this?

a) Action of soaps is due to formation of micelles. But the formation of micelles takes place at a minimum
Ans temperature called ‘Kraft temperature’. This temperature is reached in lukewarm water.

Ans and death
(b) doctors given an intravenous infusion of diluted ethanol. the enzyme responsible for oxidation of
HCHO to acid is swamped allowing time for kidneys to excrete methanol

( c) people should be educated not to drink cheap alcohol from unauthorized sources. It is not worth
saving money when the life get endangered. It at all one has to drink, the stuff must be purchased from an
authorized source.
