1. Background
Groundwater is a very important natural resource. This resource can be
extracted from the subsurface aquifer all around the year for purposes like
irrigation, industry, drinking water etc. Groundwater is the water present beneath
Earth's surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations. It is
stored in and moves slowly through geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks
called aquifers. It gets completely saturated with voids at the depth of soil pores
spaces or fractures and forms water table. Ground water recharge or deep
drainage is hydrologic process where water moves downward from surface water
to groundwater. Unlike surface water, it can also be exploited at or nearby the
place of use and can be used only when necessity is felt. Short drought does not
affect groundwater supply seriously like the surface water. Hence it can be a very
good source for regular and reliable supply of water. Due to these advantages,
groundwater is being used widely for various purposes. Since the demand of
groundwater increases with population growth, it is necessary to explore
groundwater more intensively, adequately and accurately.
For the assessment of hydro-geological condition of the area and to locate the
probable area before drilling, Geophysical Method (Electrical Resistivity Survey)
is desirable and for this purpose geophysical survey, Electrical Resistivity
Tomography (2D ERT) Survey was carried out at the study area lies in three
different locations around Dhulikhel Hospital, Lung Centre at Ward No.9, Kavre,
Nepal.

2. Location and Accessibility

The present study area is located in Dhulikhel Municipality Ward No.9, Kavre,
Nepal. Survey was conducted in three 2D profiles named ERT-1, ERT-2 and
ERT-3 and one 1D profile. Both ERT and VES lines is carried at the study area.
The survey area is nearly 25Km east from Kathmandu and easily accessible by
black topped and gravel roads. The Geographical location of the study area can
be shown in Figure below:

3. Field Visit Program

The field visit program for the Geophysical Survey was conducted on December
2018 by the team of comprising of Geophysicist, Hydro geologist, Technical
Assistants and Local Labors.

4. Conclusion and Recommendation

 The investigated area has good shallow as well as deep rock aquifer.
 Shallow aquifer can give satisfactory yield of water but groundwater
extraction from shallow depth will affect spring source of the nearby area.
( Problem)
 Thick layer of dry fractured bedrock below 116 meters to 244 meters is
working as a barrier for the shallow and deep aquifer.
 Saturated fractured bedrock below 244 meters suggest that there is good
rock aquifer and can yield good volume of water for the tube well.
 As depth of tube well will be very high and there is a thick barrier layer
between shallow and deep aquifer, tube well installation within deep
aquifer will not affect shallow source of water in the surveyed area.
 It is recommended to drill up to 350 meters by rock drilling machine by
DTH method. It is recommended to use blind pipe in shallow source to
protect shallow source of water and only use deep aquifer layer for
groundwater extraction purpose.( Mitigation Measure)
