Narrative in Production: Media Unit 2

Statement of Narrative:

The film aims to express a story of increasing anxiety, especially those due to the semi-irrational fear caused by
pressing thoughts.
In order to represent this the film utilises a “sticky note” as a symbol for pressing or invasive thoughts, and the
door serves as a motifal focus or conduit for these supposed “invasive thoughts”.
The mise en scene aims to be very clean and organised-looking; not too many distractions, rather empty, and
very clear and purposeful. This serves multiple purposes: one, it keeps the audience from getting too distracted
by the background, keeping the character as their main focus; two, gives a very serene and clear atmosphere to
the film, making it almost slightly existential in the way that it comes across and is presented; and three,
represents the character’s obsession with cleanliness and neatness, which plays into the stereotypes and
expectation that the audience may have for beings such as this. Not that they will necessary be aware of it at the
time.

The shots of the encroaching door serve its motifal meaning quite well, representing in essence the idea of it
getting ‘bigger and bigger’ as the thoughts and struggling concern get more pressing. It also seems to generate at
least minor similar anxieties in some audiences, which was sort of the point, so that illustrates the character’s
turmoil quite well.

The utilisation of some conventions, such as the greyish-blue wash borrowed from the thriller genre, also add to
this narrative in a small way, as they describe the mood of life in which the character supposedly exists within.
The ‘droning’ helps to enlighten the audience into a similar mood to put them in place of the character, which
also assists in further strengthening the motif and its abstract representation.

In essence, it is a film that represents encroaching anxieties, and attempts to represent this by recreating an
abstract scenario in which such things could be felt and seen in a very literal manner.
Keeping the fears locked behind the door, persay. Out of sight, out of mind, as the ol’ kids say.
