following maps?

x+y
(a) f(x, y, z) =
y − sin z

p
(b) f(x, y) = 1 − x 2 − y 2 ;

(c) f(u, v) =  sin(uv) .

EXERCISE 2. Given a map f : Rm → Rn , prove that lim f(x) = L holds if and only if
x→a
lim kf(x) − Lk = 0 does.

EXERCISE 3. Show that lim is not defined (by finding limits along dif-
ferent straight lines).

EXERCISE 4. Evaluate each of the following limits, or show that the limit does not exist.

EXERCISE 5. Let f(x, y) = x 2 +y 4
.
(a) Prove that the limit of f(x, y) as (x, y) approaches (0, 0) along any straight line is 0,
(b) Does lim(x,y)→(0,0) f(x, y) exist?

EXERCISE 6. Consider the function

f(x, y) =

 0, x 2 + y 2 = 0.

(a) Let a and b be fixed constants. Show that regardless of our choice of a and b
(don’t forget the special cases when a or b is zero) that the one variable functions
g(x) = f(x, b) and h(y) = f(a, y) are both continuous on the entire real line.
(b) Is f(x, y) continuous at the point (0, 0) ?

EXERCISE 7. For the function f(x, y) = x 2 e−x +y , prove that its limit at infinity along any

straight line passing through the origin is 0. Also prove that, however, the limit along
the straight line x = 1 as y → +∞ is infinite.

EXERCISE 8. Find the iterated limits

xy xy

EXERCISE 9. Find

(x,y)→(∞,∞) x 2 − xy + y 2
lim

Here you can do the polar substitution x = r cos θ, y = r sin θ and take the limit as r → ∞
by applying the Squeeze Theorem.
