THEORY I—ELEMENTARY WRITTEN THEORY MUS 173

FINAL EXAM

Name:

You will have two hours to take this final exam. Timings given for each
section are suggestions, not mandates. You may use your “annotated”
copy of Schumann’s “Arabeske,” but otherwise no outside materials are to
be used. Good luck!

PART ONE: Chord spelling/resolution. Spell the indicated chords in their

appropriate keys, and resolve them properly as indicated. You do not need to write
tendency tone numbers, but you must use key signatures. (1 pt. ea. k.s.; 2 pts. ea.
chord; 2 pts. each resolution. 5 at 5 pts. = 25 pts.) (30 minutes)
PART TWO: Study piece analysis. Answer the following questions about
Schumann’s Arabeske, attached. You may use your “annotated” study copy, but please
mark your answers to these questions on the “clean” copy provided.

1. Measures 1-16a (and pickup measure): Provide harmonic analysis for this
section, on the attached score. Include inversion symbols and proper Roman
numeral size to show chord quality. Label any non-chord tones by type. (21 pts.
total) (20 minutes)

2. Assuming there are cadences at measures 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, and 15-16, provide
labels (e.g., IAC, PC, V:PAC, etc.) for each cadence, filling in the blanks below: (2
pts. ea.)

3-4: 7-8:

11-12: 15-16:

3. Which of the terms below best describes the phrase structure of measures 1-
16a? (circle one) (3 pts.)

parallel period contrasting period

phrase group double period

4. Measures 1-40: What is the form of this section? Circle as many terms as apply
for the most specific label. (4 pts.)

simple compound rounded continuous

sectional ternary binary

5. Provide key areas for the following sections (fill in the blanks and indicate key
relationship to the tonic—relative, parallel, enharmonic equivalent, closely
related, foreign). (2 pts. each blank) (10 minutes)

Key? Type of key relationship?

mm. 1-16: C major Tonic

Minore I (mm. 41-48):

Minore II (mm. 144b-152a):

PART THREE: Prolongation. On the attached Schumann score, Identify
the prolongations marked with brackets. Mark the appropriate label in each
of the passages below (P, N, IN, PED, CS). (4 pts. each label = 16 pts.) (25
minutes)

1. mm. 27-28: 2. m. 33:

3. mm. 41-42: 4. mm. 51-52:

PART FOUR: Modulation. Each of the diatonic pivot chords in the progressions
below is missing one of its Roman numeral labels, in either the opening or closing key.
Fill in the blanks to show the chord’s dual labeling. (5 pts. ea.) (10 minutes)

1. A: I viio6 I6 ii6

6
f#: i4 V7 i

2. g: i V6 i6

Eb: vi ii V I

3. D: I V6 vi IV6

e: VI iv V i

EXTRA CREDIT: What type of binary form is the Theme from Mozart’s Piano Sonata
K.331 (otherwise known as The Theme of MUS 173)? Fill in the blanks. (3 pts. ea.)

binary

Congratulations—you are finished! Your resilience inspires me.
