road, railway or river (bridges,tunnels.) but also a protection against the action of land
or water ( walls, covered trench, dike) and a means of transition between several
modes of transport (wharves and other harbor works). Such works are called "art"
because their design and implementation involve knowledge in which experience plays
a role as important as theory. This body of knowledge is what is called the art of
engineering.
