Phoenix Union Pauses Athletic Activities

Amid COVID-19 Community Spread Increase
PHOENIX, AZ: The Phoenix Union High School District will postpone the beginning of the 2020 Winter
sports season and formally end the Fall sports season beginning Monday, November 16. The
adjustment comes after COVID-19 community spread data showed significant increases across the
District’s zip codes over the past two weeks. Members of the community can visit the PXU COVID-19
data website for more statistics related to PXU.

Phoenix Union remains committed to using data, not dates, to determine when it is safe to resume in-
person activities. District leadership will monitor community spread as it relates to District and Arizona
Interscholastic Association (AIA) benchmarks in 2 week intervals to determine when it is safe to resume
Winter sports conditioning.

“We know our student-athletes want to return to competition, and we share in their disappointment
with this delay,” said PXU Director of Student Connectedness, Dr. Zachary Muñoz. “As we continue to
monitor the community spread of COVID-19, we hope to meet the benchmarks needed for a safe
return.”

Phoenix Union recently launched a COVID-19 Data Dashboard with campus specific COVID-19
information and community spread data for the zip codes where PXU staff and students reside. The
site is updated on a weekly basis to provide stakeholders with the most accurate and timely information
available.
