PROCESS DETAILS
OF TIDAL
ENERGY
Tidal energy is a renewable energy powered by the natural rise and fall of ocean tides and currents.
It is considered renewable because the tides move on a predictable, daily schedule, depending only
on the orbits of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

There are two tidal power technologies:

1. Tidal range – relay on rise and fall of sea level to generate power
a. Tidal range traps the tides in the dam and then releases it to create energy
2. Tidal stream – harness the currents created by tides
a. Tidal streams use underwater turbines, generating power from fast flowing tidal currents
HOW WORKS
TIDAL
ENERGY

WATER ENTERS AND EXITS THE TURBINES DEPENDING ON

1 THE MOVEMENT OF TIDES

TURBINES ACTIVATE THE GENERATORS, CREATING ENERGY

2 BY SPINNING THE MODULES

3 ELECTRICITY IS RELEASED THROUGH UNDERWATER CABLES

THAT DELIVER THE ENERGY TO THE USERS

TWO TYPES OF
TIDAL RANGE:
TIDAL BARRAGE: TIDAL LAGOON:

Tidal Barrage - gates are open as the tide rises, Tidal Lagoon - a body of ocean water that is partly
and at high tide barrage gates close, creating a enclosed by natural or constructed (using natural
pool. The water is then released through the materials like rock) barrier. A tidal energy
barrage's turbines (machines that take energy generator using tidal lagoons functions similar to a
from a fluid or flow), creating energy. barrage. The turbines work as the lagoon is filling
and emptying.
WHERE IS TIDAL
ENERGY USED? Today, tidal energy is known for being used in 'La Rance' barrage
Canada in France and the 'Sihwa dam' in South Korea. It is also used in
China Canada, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom. BC is home to
Russia some of the most successful tidal systems in the world, most of
United Kingdom which are located on the coasts of many fjords and channels. In
2006, 89 tidal energy project sites were recognized in BC with an
approximation of 4,000 MW of potential energy.

COST &CONCERNS
Environmental risk
Large tidal energy systems have the potential to alter the seashore environment, resulting in
a possible threat to species.

Biofouling
Tidal energy devices are dependent on strong saltwater environments that are home to many
organisms. Plants and animals can obstruct the tidal systems by accumulating on the surface
of these devices. As a result, the operation is hindered.

Location and Intermittence

The success of tidal energy is related to location and the time of day. As a result, storage is
needed to guarantee 24-hour energy.
ECONOMIC
COST &CONCERNS
Startup costs
Due to the tidal energy turbines needing to be strong in construction to withstand the
density of water, the cost of making these devices are substantial.

Long-term economy
Although the startup cost is expensive, in the long run, tidal energy can improve the
economy as it is comparatively low-cost to maintain. This is because these devices
have only a few moving parts.
WHAT IS THE
VIABILITY OF THIS AS
AN OPTION FOR US?
Tides are more
Tidal energy is a clean renewable resource

predictable than wind It is more efficient than wind energy due to the
energy and solar density of water
energy, therefore
more reliable. It is more efficient than solar energy due to its
high ~80% conversion efficiency
WHAT ARE OUR

CONSLUSIONS?
Tidal power/energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of
tides into useful forms of power (mainly electricity).

Although tidal energy is not yet widely known or used as a form of

renewable energy, it does have future potential.

The availability of tidal energy is highly predictable and not subject to the
impact of weather conditions. The energy density of tides is also higher
than solar and wind energy, making it more efficient and reliable.
