Overall Overall Expectations By the end of this course, students will:

Expectation: • use their knowledge of ratio and proportion to investigate similar
triangles and solve problems related to similarity;
• solve problems involving right triangles, using the primary
trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem;
• solve problems involving acute triangles, using the sine law and the
cosine law

Specific – determine the measures of the sides and angles in right triangles,
Expectations: using the primary trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem;

– solve problems involving the measures of sides and angles in right

triangles in real life applications (e.g., in surveying, in navigating, in
determining the height of an inaccessible object around the school),
using the primary trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem.

Key Concepts/ -Labelling the opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse in relation to some
Big Ideas: angle θ
-Isolating variables
-Using basic trig ratios to solve for a missing side or angle in a right-
angle triangle
-Angle of elevation/angle of depression

Learning Goals: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to find a missing side or
angle of a right-angle triangle.

Success Criteria: Students will be able to successfully answer the questions in the Kahoot
activity at the end of class.

Materials/  White board

Resources:  Worksheets (as google docs)
 Trig Table
 Youtube video links
 Kahoot
 Laptop/document camera for online learning

Duration and One 3-hour period

Timing:  Getting Started (30 minutes)
 Working On It (1.5 hours, split in two sections by the 20 min
break)
 Consolidating and Connecting (20 minutes)

Brief Description Getting started: Reviewing basic building-block skills students will
of the need for today’s lesson
Problem/Task:
Working on it: Introducing Trigonometric ratios and how to use them to
solve for a missing element of a triangle. Word problems will also be
introduced.

Consolidating and Connecting: Students will demonstrate their learning

by participating in a kahoot at the end of class.

Getting Started

Review Basic Skills

-Review labelling the opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse sides of a triangle in relation to some
angle θ
-Review isolating for a variable
-If you can do this, you already have all the skills you’ll need for today’s lesson!

-Quick tutorial on using sin/cos/tan on your calculator

-Introduce Trig table as an alternate method

Working On It

Introduce Trig Ratios

-Go through note as a class and do examples

-Watch first video of solving for a missing side

-Walk through what happened in the video to solidify student understanding

-Do two examples of the trig stations as a class (one for finding the angle, one for finding a
side)
-Have students work through the remaining stations individually
-Help as needed!

-Move on to the other worksheet after (again, do first two questions as examples)
(Break)

-After break introduce word problems

-Explain angle of elevation and depression
-Work through the first two examples as a class
-Have students work on the remaining questions individually (again, helping as needed!)

-Use professional judgement to decide whether second video (10 min) on word problems
would be better watched in class or just left as a resource should students want more examples
of completed word problems

Consolidating and Connecting

Kahoot!

Students will demonstrate their learning by participating in the Kahoot at the end of class. This
is a good opportunity to review what they learned that day, as well as for the teacher to assess
student understanding.
