Issues about Flashfloods

Philippines are a tropical country. We experience two seasons, the sunny season and
rainy season. Wet season start in June to September, where in typhoons hit the Philippines. So
we sometimes experience heavy rains. Flooding has been a problem in the Philippines. With
more rainfall expected in the next few days and weeks, expect the usual flash floods. Imagine in
just an hour of raining, water level rises that cause floods. These floods can cause sickness and
damages. Each year many Filipinos die in floods.

So, why do we experience flash floods? One of the causes is the drainage system. Many
of our cities are made of mostly concrete material. When you have an urban drainage basin that
is made of concrete, there is no ground for water to sink into. It is also because of some drainage
are poorly designed. Maybe the budget for the drainage was corrupted by the government
officials. Second is the geography of our country. According to inquirer our country’s geography
is floodplain which fertile land suitable for agriculture. So, when people transform it into a
residential or commercial area, it becomes flood-prone. Lastly, Filipinos are irresponsible.
Filipinos are not responsible of throwing their garbage. This garbage can interrupt the flow of
water that might cause floods.

We can prevent floods. If all of us were responsible and smart enough of our actions. We
must be conscious of our environment. Let us learn to plant, a single of it is a big help for our
environment. Let us exercise using environment friendly materials. We always remember that
nature never forgives. If we destroy it, expect that we suffer.
