1. What is the most common reason for water shortages and what is a possible solution?
Water shortages occur due to global climate change which causes extreme weather and it causes
some areas to experience water shortages and other areas to experience an increase in water
discharge. For example, in Indonesia, recently there have been heavy rains which makes water
discharge increase and some areas have experienced floods even flash floods. However, based on
information, China is experiencing a heat wave and it makes the source of water in Jiangxi is
experiencing drought. Water shortages can also occur because clean water has run out by certain
parties who are better able to take water, especially if the area has a high population. In addition,
water shortages can be caused by water pollution from industrial waste, garbage, detergents, or oil
which can damage the clean water ecosystem. If the clean water ecosystem is damaged, it will affect
the water that will flow. The solution that might be done by ourselves is to use water wisely, not
excessively. We can also plant plants or take care of the environment in order to maintain water
absorption because plants absorb water that falls and then becomes a reservoir of water in the soil.
In addition, we can also build a dam from river water or a simple dam as a water reserve together
with the surrounding community. However, solving the problem of water shortages should be
carried out together not only starting with ourselves and the surrounding environment. It needs the
government’s role through several policies such as carrying out land and water conservation
rehabilitation, implementing regulations on maximum water consumption for several sectors, or
building reservoirs.
