Basic Properties of Matter

In this module, we will be discussing the basic properties of matter.

Our Target

At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:

1. define matter, mass and weight
2. describe the properties of matter

Let’s Try

Direction: Choose the correct answer. Write the letter on the blank.

Let’s Explore

Pick up the
Concept

Look around you. What are the things that you see? All the things that you see in your
surroundings are matter. Most matter can be seen, but some, such as air, water vapor,
cannot be seen.
What is matter?

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Everything you see around you,
including yourself, is made up of matter.
Basic Physical Properties of Matter

All matter has properties. A basic physical property is a characteristics that is common
to any kind of matter. It can be observed and measured.

Matter has Mass and Weight

All matter has mass. Mass does not change unless its matter is taken out of the object.
Mass does not change with location. Your mass is the same wherever you are.

FIRST QUARTER- WEEK 1
BASIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The greater

the mass of an object, the greater the weight. This is why
a cup of flour, which has more mass, is heavier than a
cup of cotton balls even if they are almost of the same
size.
Figure 1: Cup of flour has more mass
than a cup of cotton balls.

Weight
Weight tells how light or heavy an object is. Weight is a
measure of gravitational force of Earth to an object. Weight
changes with location, while mass does not. The farther you are
from the surface of the Earth, the less you weigh. This is because
the force of attraction varies with height. The unit of measurement
used to determine the weights of objects and people are pound (lb) Weighing scale
and kilogram (kg).

Gravity

Gravity is the force that causes an object to

attract another object. When an object is on the
moon, its weight there is less than its weight on Earth.
However, its mass remains the same. For example, if
you weigh 25 kilograms on Earth, when you travel to
the moon your mass will still be the same but your
weigh will much less than 25 kilograms due to the
moon’s very weak gravity.

Let’s Find Out

Activity 1
I. Objective:
Describe the mass of objects found at home
II. Materials:
Paper and pen
Objects found at home
III. Procedures
1. List down the objects found at home.
2. Describe the mass of each objects and record your observation in the table.

Questions:
1. Which objects belong to first column? How do you determine whether the objects
belong to first column or not?

Matter Has Volume

Volume is the amount of space taken up by matter. You

can use a graduated cylinder or measuring cup to measure
the space taken up by water. The unit to measure volume is
millimeter (mL) or liter ( L). The space that air occupied when
you blew it into the balloon is the volume of the air in the
balloon.
Figure 2: Graduated cylinder
For the objects that have well- defined shapes, you can used to measure the volume
measure and calculate the volume using a formula. To find the taken up by the matter.
volume of rectangular solid, multiply its length by its width and
its height.

V= l × w × h
V=10 cm × 5 cm × 2 cm
=100 cm3

Matter Occupies Space

Any object occupies space.
Large objects occupy large spaces.
Small objects occupy small spaces
Figure 3: Book occupies
more space on the table
compared to pot with Figure 4: Water occupies
plant. space in a glass

Activity 2: Properties of Matter

I. Objective
Describe the properties of each matter
II. Materials:
Different objects in the house, pitcher of water, plastic bag, clear glass, small
ball of different sizes or any small objects, Weighing scale.
III. Procedure:
1. Observe the different objects inside your house.
2. Mark the spaces the objects occupy
3. Blow air into plastic bag. Observe what happens.
4. Pour water into the clear glass. Let it spill. Observe what happens.
5. Then, put small balls of different sizes into the glass of water one at a time.
Observe what happens.
