ESSAY WRITING
TOPIC: ‘GRATITUDE IS GREAT’
WRITTEN BY: ADITI SATHE, CLASS 11, ELPRO INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, PUNE

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
-Melody Beattie

As said in ancient Indian scriptures,

This shloka instils in us the great virtue of gratitude – that one should fondly remember any
noble service done unto him by anybody anytime, feel grateful, and also do some noble service
in return. We as humans come across many people and experiences that we feel thankful for. I,
as an individual, feel obliged to express my gratitude towards the people who have helped me
grow as a human and become the person I am today.

Parents are our first teachers. I feel privileged to have parents who have helped me in every step
of my life, whether academic or social. I am thankful to my mother, who helped me improve
my memorisation skills, and my father, who helped me learning concepts that school wouldn’t
teach me.

Former President of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk once said, “A good teacher is like a candle — it
consumes itself to light the way for others.” My academic development has been the culmination of
efforts of my incredible teachers. My Biology teacher made me love a subject I never thought I
would enjoy. My Physics teacher helped me expand my knowledge beyond what textbooks taught
me. My English teacher taught me how to express my thoughts to society in a way that would leave
an impression on the listeners. I am no less than incredibly grateful for everything my teachers have
taught me.

Expressing gratitude in a limited number of words for people who have helped you is a herculean
task to do. Yet relations with people who expect gratitude as a repayment for their generosity are
no more than transactions. Unconditional expression of gratitude is the one quality all humans
should strive to achieve, because a little ‘Thank you’ can go a long way.
