Relationship between “Engineering” and “Technology”

and Characteristics of Chemical Engineering?
What is Engineering?

The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines,

apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct
or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific
operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and
property.

What is Technology?

The information necessary to achieve a certain production outcome from a particular means
of combining or processing selected inputs which include production processes, intra-firm
organizational structures, management techniques, and means of finance, marketing methods or
any of its combination.

What is the relationship?

We live in the age of technology, when each year brings more amazing inventions. Most of
these inventions and the corresponding explosion in knowledge are due to engineering and technology.
Engineering and technology are related terms in our society. Careers in engineering and technology are
regarded as two different (but overlapping) paths. The high school student and the college student (who
is about to graduate) may not know the difference. There is some uncertainty in the public mind as to
what engineers and technologist do. This relationship is shown in below figure.

Engineering and technology are both concerned the same technical issues ranging from design,
development, construction through maintenance and operation. They are closely related professional
areas.

Examples of the existing relationship between engineering and technology

GPS (Global Positioning System)

GPS is a widely used tool for navigation & position tracking. It is free of charge. It is also useful
in finding user’s position in time. It is employed in finding location and the corresponding changes on
the earth surface with grater` precision. There are numerous applications of GPS covering almost every
domain. It is been used from past two decades providing precision and accuracy over other methods
such as Radar.

Smart devices

There is an increasing awareness that advancing the quality of life on our planet requires
technological innovations that optimizes dwindling resources and leads to self-sufficiency through a
smarter use of natural and engineered products. Smart systems, powered by smart sensors are emerging
as a key technical innovation with potentials to support modern infrastructures from power grids,
communication systems, scientific facilities, transportation, and manufacturing. It is also clear that the
Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as a paradigm of pervasive presence of a variety of things/objects
in the Internet space through wireless and wired hyper-connectivity. It is envisioned that these
things/objects will be embedded with local intelligent capabilities to enable them to cooperate with
other things/objects to solve common problems and provide new services.

Characteristics of Chemical Engineering

Compared with civil, mechanical, and other forms of engineering, chemical engineering is a relatively
young branch of the subject that has been developed since the early twentieth century. The design and
operation of efficient chemical plant equipment are the main duties of chemical engineers. It should
be pointed out that industrial-scale chemical plant equipment cannot be built simply by enlarging the
laboratory apparatus used in basic chemical research.

Chemical engineering is a discipline influencing numerous areas of technology. In broad terms,

chemical engineers conceive and design processes to produce, transform and transport materials —
beginning with experimentation in the laboratory followed by implementation of the technology in
full-scale production.

2
Chemical engineers are in great demand because of the large number of industries that depend on the
synthesis and processing of chemicals and materials. In addition to traditional careers in the chemical,
energy and oil industries, chemical engineers enjoy increasing opportunities in biotechnology,
pharmaceuticals, electronic device fabrication and environmental engineering. The unique training of
the chemical engineer becomes essential in these areas when processes involve the chemical or physical
transformation of matter.

For example, chemical engineers working in the chemical industry investigate the creation of new
polymeric materials with important electrical, optical or mechanical properties. This requires attention
not only to the synthesis of the polymer, but also to the flow and forming processes necessary to create
a final product. In biotechnology, chemical engineers help design production facilities that use
microorganisms and enzymes to synthesize new drugs. Problems in environmental engineering that
engage chemical engineers include the development of processes (catalytic converters, effluent
treatment facilities) to minimize the release of or deactivate products harmful to the environment.

To do these jobs, the chemical engineer must have a complete and quantitative understanding of both
the engineering and scientific principles underlying these technological processes. This is reflected in
the curriculum of the Chemical Engineering Department, which includes the study of applied
mathematics, material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy and mass transfer,
separations technologies, chemical reaction kinetics and reactor design, and process design. These
courses are built on a foundation in the sciences of chemistry, physics and biology.
