A NEW ERA FOR AIR TRAVEL

I An exciting new era for air travel began when the European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, introduced the biggest and most
luxurious plane ever built. At a ceremony held in Toulouse, France, in January 2005, the world got its first look at the A380 - the
world’s first two-level passenger aircraft. The new plane offers passengers an alternative to the transport concept of Airbus’s
major competitor, the Boeing Company.
II Advantages of the A380 are convenience and comfort for travellers as well as benefits to the environment. The A380 has got
spacious shopping areas, libraries, bars – and even showers! It helps the environment by using less fuel per passenger than its
competitors and can carry 25% more passengers, which means fewer flights. With very little landing space at airports, this is
quite important. As a result, eleven international airlines announced that they were thinking of ordering the new model.
III Airbus believes the A380 will be a business success. The company says that the future of air travel depends on larger planes
with cheaper tickets that fly to the world’s major cities. The A380 will fly to about 60 major airports around the world. However,
passengers who want to fly to smaller cities will have to transfer.
IV Boeing, Airbus’s main competitor, sees a different future for air travel. In 2001, Boeing decided that instead of making their
planes bigger, the company would produce smaller aircraft that would fly direct to more destinations. In 2005, Boeing launched
the 7E7. Just as the company had promised, passengers did not need to change planes, making flying more convenient.
V The question is: Which airline’s vision of the future will passengers prefer – the huge A380 or the smaller 7E7? It is possible, of
course, that both planes will be in demand. Only time will tell.
