About Us

There is no shame in the experience of domestic and sexual violence and all feelings are valid.

Partner-related violence is a reality in our communities and needs to be addressed. A

conversation needs to start about how unhealthy relationships impact individuals and families.

Avalon Center is a safe space, promoting an end to domestic and sexual violence.

Mission: Avalon Center aims to stop domestic and sexual violence by stopping the cycle of

abuse through prevention, education, shelter to empower victims to move forward with their

lives.

What We Do

Avalon Center houses up to 50 women and children a day providing needed assistance in

Williamsburg and the Middle Peninsula. Our team helps individuals with finding employment,

permanent housing and tools of healing. The staff consists of case managers and accredited

counselors ready to provide support services. Avalon Center has dual accreditation for domestic

violence and sexual assault. We accommodate up to 1400 children, women and men a year in

several counties throughout Virginia. Avalon has also created relationships with local law

enforcement, courts, and schools to increase awareness and education.

Programs
The Avalon Center hosted our Annual Spaghetti Dinner to raise donations for the organization.

Our History

1978: Avalon’s first service, the Helpline, was created

1980: Organization, originally known as Williamsburg Task Force on Battered Woman was

certified as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization.

1985: Shelter and Helpline were primarily made up of volunteers and part-time staff.
1990: Name was changed to Avalon: A Center for Women and Children.

1994: Board of Directors approved plan to raise funds to construct a new emergency

shelter and six apartments.

1999: Administrative office completed, and the first family moved into one of six apartments.

2016: Avalon: A Center for Women and Children changes name to: Avalon Center.

Current Programs

We rely on donations and volunteers to provide meaningful programming. Donations provide

shelter and support for domestic and sexual violence victims. Volunteers truly make a difference

in the lives of everyone involved. Events are a key source of community- building and

contributing, including:
