LESSON PREVIEW

Whatever the type of business, law states that every workplace must be fully hygienic
environment. This is extremely important in an establishment such as a hair or beauty salon that sees so
many different people passing through every day. On top of heavy footfall, working in a salon environment
also means that you are exposed to many different clients and performing treatments everywhere from
their hair and scalp, to their fingernails and toenails, to their most intimate areas.

With all of this in mind, as a salon owner, it is imperative that excellent salon hygiene and good housekeeping within your
business is at the forefront of your mind, not only for your staff but also for your visitors and clients to ensure that your

business continues to run effectively and nobody’s health is put at risk.

Definition of Terms
1. Sanitation the promotion of hygiene and prevention of disease by maintenance of
sanitary conditions (as by removal of sewage and trash)
2. Sterilization the rendering of something free from viable microorganisms (as using steam
or dry heat)
3. Contamination a process of contaminating : a state of being contaminated

4. Disinfection to destroy, inactivate, or significantly reduce the concentration of pathogenic

agents

Sanitation Technique
Look at the things around you. Even though these things may look clean in your eyes but what you do not
know is that there is still presence of contaminants. Contaminant is any substance that causes
contamination.
There is still a solution to prevent and control infections or contagious diseases in the salon and that is
through decontamination. Decontamination is removing pathogens and other substances from tools or
surfaces.
There are three levels of decontamination and these are sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection.
Sterilization is the process of making an object germ-free by the destruction
of all kinds of bacteria and it is also the highest level of decontamination.
Sterilization is impossible since you cannot sterilize all the tools and equipment
used in the salon.

Sanitation means significantly reducing the number of pathogens found on a

surface and is also considered as the lowest level of decontamination. Why is
sanitation considered as the lowest level of decontamination? Example is the
hair in a comb. Hair is the contaminant in the comb. How do you apply
sanitation here? All you must do is to remove the hair from the comb, and it is
as easy as that. That is why sanitation is the lowest level of decontamination.

Disinfection is the second level of decontamination next to sterilization.

Disinfection is very much applicable in the salon since sterilization is not
practical and sanitation alone is not enough. Disinfection is the use of
disinfectant and antiseptic. Disinfectant is any substance or chemicals used to
destroy bacteria but is not safe to use on skin while antiseptic is an agent that
prevents the multiplication of bacteria. Since it is milder than disinfectant. It can
be use directly on the skin.

Service Maintenance Program

Now, after performing the hand spa treatment to your client, it is time for you to do the following steps:
1.Dispose waste products including used wax according to occupational health and safety rules
and regulations

Hazardous Waste Best Practices

The most important first step salon or spa owners and managers should take is making sure a waste
management compliance program is set in place. Below are several best practices for bagging,
separating, and storing hazardous waste items that will help ensure the safety and compliance of your
program:

Properly seal items. Prior to storing any hazardous waste items in a bin, place them individually in a
sealed plastic bag. This will keep items from mixing and causing a reaction.
Use separate bins. Incompatible hazardous waste items must remain separate. It is recommended to
use designated bins for each type of hazardous waste category: aerosols and flammables, toxics,
corrosive acidic, corrosive alkaline (basic), oxidizers and universal waste.

Label containers properly. Once the initial item is placed within a bin, label the container as hazardous
waste, and include the accumulation start date and an indication of the hazardous characteristic of the
waste. Should an inspector ever visit your salon, proper labeling is one of the first things they will
evaluate.

Scout a safe storage area. Store accumulation bins in a dedicated, clean, and neatly organized
hazardous waste area. Make sure bins are stored away from heavy traffic areas, electrical panels,
perishable or consumable product storage and dock doors.

2. Sanitize and store tools, supplies and equipment.

All properly cleaned, disinfected, and dried implements/tools must be stored in a sanitary manner. A
lined drawer is usually adequate, provided it is clean, contains only clean items and is properly labeled.
Store soiled or used items in a properly labeled, covered container separate from clean items. Never
use airtight containers or zipper bags these may promote bacterial growth.

3. Clean and sanitize workstation for the next treatment activity

Steps to Clean & Sanitize Surfaces

1) Clean the surface with an appropriate cleaner.
2) After cleaning, thoroughly rinse the surface with clean water.
3) Apply a sanitizing solution to the surface. You can use a quarter-based or chlorine-based sanitizer.
Have the appropriate test strips available to test for proper parts per million (ppm).
4) Allow the sanitizer to air dry on the surface.

REMEMBER

Additional considerations for employers.

Educate workers performing cleaning, laundry, and trash pick-up to recognize the symptoms of COVID-
19.Provide instructions on what to do if they develop symptoms within 14 days after their last possible
exposure to the virus.

Develop policies for worker protection and provide training to all cleaning staff on site prior to
providing cleaning tasks. Training should include when to use PPE, what PPE is necessary, how to
properly don (put on), use, and doff (take off) PPE, and how to properly dispose of PPE. Ensure workers
are trained on the hazards of the cleaning chemicals used in the workplace in accordance with OSHA’s
Hazard Communication.

Comply with OSHA’s standards on Bloodborne Pathogens), including proper disposal of regulated
waste, and PPE.
