Most Essential Learning Competency

Performs post foot spa activity (TLE_HEBC9-12FS-IIb-j-4)

Learning Objectives:
After completing this weekly learning activity sheet, you will be able to:
1. explain the importance of post foot spa activity;
2. adhere techniques in storing and sanitation of tools and
equipment;
3. apply good housekeeping system (5S) and service maintenance
program according to OHSC and Department of Health
requirements and standards; and
4. appreciate post-foot spa activity.

Key Concepts

Salon workers and even the owner/manager of the salon should ensure
sanitation and maintain healthy practices within the workstation. After the foot
spa treatment, workers should ensure that all the tools and equipment, supplies,
and materials are disinfected and properly placed ready for the next customers to
get in for the service.

Why should spa salons need to be cleaned and sanitized?

A spa salon needs to maintain a clean and healthy environment as they offer
services in which tools can easily transmit bacteria and viruses to clients and
employees. From viruses such as hepatitis B and C, herpes, HIV, and flu to fungi
like athlete’s foot and nail fungus, and bacteria that can cause skin infections.
Moreover, sanitizing helps to reduce bacteria on a surface. Sterilization helps to
destroy or eliminate all forms of microbial life.

In this lesson, you will understand the basic procedures necessary and
needed to protect the health and safety of your clients and even employees. By
following these procedures, you complied with the health and safety requirements.
You’ll also avoid potential customer complaints, civil penalties, and license
approval.

Guided Practice

Activity 1: Let it be face!

What you need: Paper and ballpen
Directions: Draw a smiley face if you agree with the statements and a
sad face if you disagree. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.

Storing and Sanitation Techniques Agree Disagree

1. Salon spa worker should always clean both their hands
and their client’s feet before every service. Cleaning
hands decreases the hazard of scattering germs from
client to client.
2. All tools (including individual tools that a client brings in
or that are left in the salon), equipment, and materials
that come in connection with a client must be suitably
cleaned (sterile) and disinfected before servicing each
client. Before any implement or file can be used on a
client, it must be properly cleaned and sanitized.
3. If any metal tool or hard piece of equipment has come
into contact with blood, body fluid, or an unhealthy
condition, it must immediately be cleaned.
4. Stock clean and disinfect tools in a clean container or
lined drawer (labeled “disinfect”) that is separate from
stained or used tools and files (so you never get
confused and pick up a dirty tool).
5. Sanitation is an often misunderstood term. Disinfecting
means “cleaning to remove all visible residue or debris.”
Proper cleaning is the first step in safety, but it must be
followed by disinfection, which involves the use of
chemicals to destroy microbes on non-living surfaces.
6. Use clean towels for each client.
7. Products such as, scrubs, paraffin wax, masks, creams,
lotions, and oils must always be used in a hygienic
manner that avoids contamination.
To avoid contamination:
- Dispose off used remaining product between
clients.
- Use single-use disposable apparatuses to
eliminate products from containers for application
or remove the product with a clean, disinfected
spatula and put the product into a disposable
container.

Activity 3: It’s your time to shine!

What you need: Mobile phone, paper and ballpen/pencil
Directions: Make a video clip or printed pamphlet for advocacy about service
maintenance program. (A pamphlet is a small booklet comprising
information about a single subject. You may refer to it using other
words, like leaflet, handout, booklet, brochure, or flyer.) You have
the freedom to choose whether you make a video clip or a printed
pamphlet. Your performance/output will be assessed using rubric
scoring. Create and enjoy!

Service Maintenance Program

A. Clean as disinfecting as recommended.
After use, the footbath should be emptied of water and that any visible
debris is removed. Use detergent or soap along with clean water to remove stains
and marks on the surfaces of the footbath. After this initial cleaning procedure,
disinfect the surfaces using an EPA-approved antiseptic solution while following
the manufacturer's instructions for use of the formulation. Follow recommended
dilutions to ensure complete sterilization or to keep from damaging the surfaces of
the footbath.

B. Be aware of the condition of the footbath.

If you are unable to clean and disinfect your unit regularly, you should be
aware that it will need more than a regular level of service when you get around to
do that. This is to safeguard that no unwanted buildup of bacteria in the system.
Get the manufacturer's commendations and guidelines for such cases. You may
need a disinfectant with a higher concentration or even a special product such as
tuberculocidal agents to ensure thorough cleaning. Once the component has
undertaken enough disinfection, make it a point to regularly perform cleaning and
disinfection.

C. Be safe during cleaning.

Unplug the appliance from the socket and let it cool down first before
scrubbing. Do not employ rough cleaning agents that can damage the tub and the
vital components of the unit. Use the proper recommended cleaning formulations.
Clean the splash cover and pumice stone by hand with soap and warm water for
best results.

D. Brush the essential components of the foot spa basin.

The detachable parts, inlet jets filter screen of the foot spa tub should be

a brush and soap or antiseptic, observing proper cleaning instructions. Rinse
them with clean water and drain.
