Although with the personal pronouns I, he, she, and it the form was
used as the past tense of the verb TO BE, in the conditional form, the
form were used. You could also use could instead of would.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
If I ate less, I would lose weight. I would lose weight if I ate less.
c. Third Conditional
In English there are several types of conditionals and, among them, the third
conditional. This type of conditional is used to think about past situations that
did not occur and imagine what results they would have had.
Remember that to make the participle we must take into account if the verb
is regular (it will be formed by adding the particle -ed at the end of the verb)
or irregular (3rd column of the list of irregular verbs).
Sometimes other modal verbs such as could, might are used instead of
would:
THIRD CONDITIONAL
COULD If I had saved my money, I could have gone on holiday. If I had saved ,
I would have gone on vacation.
MIGHT If we had had time, we might have gone to the beach. If we had had
time, we might have gone to the beach.
Table 2. Third Conditional
Another feature of conditionals is that the order of the two sentences can be
changed. If we start with the ( If ) condition we will separate them with a comma . If
we start with the phrase that expresses the result, it is not necessary to put
the comma .
d. Rewrite the sentences and use the third conditional. Keep the same meaning.
Example
My car was out of order. I did not drive her there.
If my car had not been out of order, I would have driven her there.
She did not give me her phone number. I could not call her.
If she .. had given.. me her phone number, I could have called her.
He was at work. He could not go with us.
If he had not been at work, he .. could have gone.. with us.
My dad did not buy any sugar. My mum did not make any cake.
If my dad .. had bought.. some sugar, my mum would have made some
cake.
I travelled round the world because I had won the lottery.
I wouldn't have travelled round the world if I . had not won.. the lottery.
We did not have enough money. We could not afford to eat in
restaurants.
If we .. had had.. enough money, we could have afforded to eat in
restaurants.
e. Feelings and emotions
They are a huge part of all of us! Everybody has different feelings, and it's very
common for a person to experience different emotions throughout the day as
things happen and situations develop. Feelings are different from emotions,
even though both are related.
