Multiplying Decimals by 10,


Lesson 10 100 and 100

LET US KNOW 1
Multiplying decimals is a long process. You must multiply each
number to other and add all of it one by one. After this, you will count
the decimal places of the given number to put the new place of the
decimal point.
But there is a shortcut to multiply decimals when the given
numbers were multiplied by the power of ten ─ 10, 100, and 1 000. The
lesson below explains the shortcut in more detail, plus has different
kinds of exercises for students.

LET US STUDY

Remember when you multiply whole numbers by 10, 100, 1000,


and so on (powers of ten), you can simply “tag” as many zeros on the

product as there are in the factor 10, 100, 1000 etc. There is a similar
shortcut for multiplying decimal numbers by numbers such as 10,
100, and 1000:
Move the decimal point to the right as many places as there are zeros
in the factor.
Example #1

10 x 0.49 = 04.9 = 4.9


Move the decimal point one step to the right (10 has one zero).

Example #2

100 x 2.6 5 0 = 265.0 = 265


Move the decimal point two step to the right (100 has two zeroes).

Example #3

1000 x 0.3 7 0 = 370.0 = 370


Move the decimal point three step to the right (1000 has three zeroes).
Write 0 at the one of 0.37 so that decimal point can “jump over” to that
place.
