Let’s Check

Activity 1. Identify the following. Write your answer in the space provided before the
item.

BIODIVERSITY 1. It refers to the variability of all varieties of life on earth. The plants,
animals, micro-organisms, the genes they contain and the ecosystem they form.

HUMAN INDUCED DISASTERS 2. An event whether natural or human induced that’s

likely to cause adverse effects upon the status or sustainable use of any component of
biological diversity.

IN SITE CONSERVATION 3. This method emphasizes on the conservation work at

original site of biodiversity.

EXPLOITATION 4. One of the cause that threaten biodiversity is through collection

made by educational institutions, local authorities as revenue resources, food gathering
and poaching.

GENETIC DIVERSITY 5. A variety of genetic information contained in all of the

individual plants, animals and micro-organisms occurring within populations of species.

ECOSYSTEMS DIVERSITY 6. It refers to habitats, biotic communities and ecological

processes in the biosphere.

CONSERVATION 7. The failure to internalize the values of biodiversity within the

decision making process of the Nations and human being.

HUMAN-CAUSED EXTINCTION 8. Rise of demand for resources results to land use,

species reduction and increase of ecosystem changes such as random population
changes, outcrops resulting to biodiversity loss.

BIOSPHERE RESERVES 9. A programme launched by UNESCO in 1971 to promote

sustainable development supported by local community efforts and sound science

MORE THAN 400 10. How many plants and animals species found in the Philippines
that are already categories as threatened with extinction.
Let’s Analyze

Activity 1. In this part, you are once again required to elaborate

thoroughly your answer on the questions below:

1. What is biodiversity conservation?

 Conservation of biodiversity is the conservation and protection of

biodiversity, in order to achieve sustainable development benefits.
There are three main objectives and these are: to preserve the
diversity of species, sustainable utilization of species and ecosystem,
and to maintain life-supporting systems and essential ecological
processes.

2. Describe the consumption use value of biodiversity as food, drugs and

medicines, fuel and fiber with appropriate examples.

 As a food, the consumption use value of biodiversity is big; we use

the resource that comes from biodiversity as foods such as fruits,
vegetables, and animals. The other ingredients of drugs can also be
found in biodiversity. As for medicines the scientists study some
herbal plants that can cure disease example of this is lagundi leaf
that helps you feel better if you have cough. In fuel we use fossil
fuel. In fiber w use some plants that are fiber to make clothes and
etc.

3. What role does biodiversity play in conservation concepts?

 The biodiversity plays an important role in conservation concepts

because the biodiversity is the place where we are, and a place and
a habitat to all living organisms in earth. The biodiversity plays as a
main character in a role of conservation concepts if we think of it as
a drama. We know that the main character is an important role it is
the same as biodiversity, we need to make sure to help the
biodiversity in a good way like how we give advice to the main
character of a drama.
In a Nutshell

Activity 1. Biodiversity can be destroyed by natural changes or by human

disruption. Ecosystems and species provide different variety of goods and
other services which are vital to our well-being. Please feel free to write
your ideas as an individual to help conserve biodiversity. I will supply the
first item and you will continue the rest.

1. Reducing the amount of water use

Your Turn

2. Do not burn plastics.

3. Volunteer in a cleanup community and tree planting.

4. Separate the biodegradable and non biodegradable waste.

5. Plant flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

7. Instead of riding a taxi or car take a walk or use bicycle.

8. Recycle plastic and grass products. You can use plastic as a pot in
planting flowers.

9. Use energy conserving light bulb around the house.

10. Eat more organically grown produce items.
