State of the Philippine

Environment
Lesson 5
Lesson objectives:

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to answer the following:
 1. Describe the State of the Philippine Environment.
 2. Identify the major environmental issues in the
Philippines
 3. Cite ways to reduce the environmental problem in the
Philippines.
 4. Give the importance of the environment in human life.
Planet Earth is made up of different
things – air, water, plants, animals, soil,
rocks, minerals, crude oil and other
fossil fuels. These things are called
natural resources because they are not
made by the people; rather they are
gathered fromthe nature.
Philippines is considered rich in natural
resources. We have fertile, arable
lands, high diversity of plants and
animals, extensive coastline and rich
mineral deposits. We have natural gas,
coal, and geothermal energy. Wind and
water are also harnessed for electricity
generation
The two big bodies of water that surround the Philippines
are the Pacific
Ocean in the east and south China Sea. There are many
watersheds in our country because we have abundant
rainfall.

Minerals is one of the most important natural resources

found in the Philippines.

The richness of the Philippines in terms of mineral

resources is being attributed to its location in the
equator.
Major Environmental Issues

Wherever we go, we have seen that humans have

altered the environment
and shaped it to meet their needs. In only few
generations we have transformed the
face of our country, place a great strain and
profoundly affected other species.Here
are some of the serious environmental issues that
affect biosphere
1. Pollution
the presence in or introduction into the
environment of a
substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous
effects. These harmful materials are called
pollutants.
Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash.
They can also be created by human activity, such as
trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants
damage the quality of air, water, and land.
2. Deforestation
The temporary or permanent clearing
of forest for agriculture or other uses.
A denuded forest no longer make valuable
contributions
to the environment or to the people who
depend on forest.Deforestation increase soil
erosion and contirbutes to loss of biological
diversity.
3. Global Warming

is the long-term heating of Earth's climate

system observed since the
pre-industrial period (between 1850 and
1900) due to human activities, primarily
fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-
trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's
atmosphere.
4. Climate Change
is the global phenomenon of climate
transformation characterized by the changes in the
usual climate of the planet (regarding
temperature, precipitation, and wind)
that are especially caused by human activities.

As a result of unbalancing the weather of Earth,

the sustainability of the planet’s ecosystems is
under threat, as well as the future of humankind
and the estability of the global economy.
5. Overpopulation
occurs when a species' population
exceeds the carrying capacity of its
ecological niche. It can result from an
increase in births (fertility rate), a
decline in the mortality rate, an
increase in immigration, or an
unsustainable biome and
depletion of resources.
Ways to reduce the Environmental
problem in the Philippines.

The Department of Environment and Natural

Resources (DENR) is responsible for the
formulation and implementation of policies,
guidelines, and rules related to
environmental management, as well as the
management and conservation of our
country’s natural resources.
The priority program of DENR are the
following:
 1. clean air,
 2. clean water,
 3. solid waste management,
 4. geohazard, groundwater assessment and responsible
mining,
 5. national greening program,
 6. intensified forest protection and anti – illegal logging
 7. enhanced biodiversity conservation
 8. scaling up coastal and marine ecosystem
Here are some ways to help reduce the
problems of our Environment:
 1. Use energy more efficiently. Producing electricity and natural gas and delivering it
 to your door generates greenhouse gas emissions. ...
 2. Install renewables.
 3. Conserve water.
 4. Use the 5R’s(Reduce, reuse, recycle, repair and recover)
 5. Travel less
 6. Use Reusable Bags. Plastic grocery-type bags that get thrown out end up in
 landfills or in other parts of the environment.
 7. Ship goods more efficiently.
 8. Save electricity
 9. Don’t throw your garbage’s anywhere
 10. Do not use Plastic
The Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) mandate to
protect/conserve our natural resources and
improve the quality of the environment.

Environment plays an important role in the

healthy living of human beings. It matters
because it is the only home that humans
have, and it provides air, food, and other
needs.
