Secondary Level English Teacher,

Siddhartha Higher Secondary School,

Hetauda, Makwanpur.
1. Background

Teaching is not only delivering lectures loudly in the classroom but making the learners learn
the things specified in the curriculum. Hence it requires a competent teacher to consider the
obstacles and try out the solutions so as to create favorable healthy teaching learning
environment to achieve the desired goals. An action research helps a teacher to identify the
problems and sort out the strategies to overcome them. It helps a teacher grow professionally
and have utmost satisfaction in course of teaching learning activities.

2. Problem Identification

I am a secondary level English teacher teaching in Siddhartha Higher Sec. School, Hetauda. for
over twenty years. I am known as a well experienced teacher. I teach English for grade 7, 8, 9,
10, 11, and 12. However, I face several problems in my teaching like crowded classroom, noisy
pupils, invisible writing on the blackboard from every corner, inattentive students etc. One of
the major problems that I faced in my class is; students don’t pay attention to my teaching
English.

3. Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study were

a. To find out the causes behind poor attention of the students during my teaching
b. To develop some strategies to draw more and more attention of the students in my
teaching and improve their learning.

4. Methods of Data Collection:-

Open interview

I requested some of my teachers to observe my teaching in the classroom and give me the
feedbacks to improve my teaching. I called some of the students from each class in a separate
room and asked them why students didn’t pay attention to my teaching. I motivated them to be
free and frank to pour their opinions. It was an interview with students as well as feedbacks
from my collegues which helped me to know their ignorance behind my teaching.

5. Data Analysis/ Findings

From teachers I found the following feedbacks

a. I should not stand in one place but move left or write and front and back to draw the
attention of each student.
b. I should use question and answer techniques frequently to seek the answer from students.
c. I had better use students centered methods in teaching.
d. I should conduct group works and pair works activities to engage each participant.
e. I should have specific objectives, instructional materials, plan of certain activities to be
performed in the class to meet my objectives, practice exercises to be done in the class and
home assignment.
f. While teaching I should not take book in my hand rather use physical gesture(acting) as per
the requirements of the text items.

From students I was able to identify my following weaknesses.

a. I look very aggressive in my class

b. I don’t engage them in fun activities.
c. I should have commanding sound.
d. I should bring teaching learning materials

6. Conclusion

After analyzing the data collected from students and my fellow teachers, I came to know I
should make my classroom lively by movement, gesture, fun activity, games etc. I should
prepare the objectives, instructional materials and activities to be performed to make my class
attentive and attractive.

7. Implementation

After getting feedbacks from my teachers and my students I brought some changes in my
classroom activities. I used participant oriented activities. I made my students sing whatever
they like and rest of the students had to follow. Sometimes I myself started singing and dancing
on the chants as mentioned in the lower secondary and secondary level English books. I used
question answer method after making them read each paragraph to draw their attention in
reading. I started going to my class with daily lesson plans and required daily materials. Finally I
found my students waiting for my class and paying serious attention participating in all of the
activities conducted in the classroom.

1. Introduction
Most of the teachers from various public schools usually say that their students run away from
school after tiffin time and we felt the same in our school. Since the school level curriculum
designers have set the goals of different educational levels in such a way that we can’t fulfill the
objectives mentioned in the curriculum in less than seven periods each day so we can’t ignore
this burning problem for many days. That’s why I have conducted this project work to solve this
problem of students fleeing away from school after tiffin time to a great extent.
2. Objectives
The objectives of the project work were
a. To identify why most of the students run away from school after tiffin time.
b. To lessen the reasons behind their absence from school.
3. Rationale of this Project
Certainly the findings of the causes and the measures for solutions suggested to overcome this
major problem of students running from this school will benefit most of the public schools after
the completion of this project work. To improve the quality of education, first
We need to create a healthy and interesting teaching learning environment so that students can
give more priority to stay at school than run away from there.
4. Planning/ Strategies
To find out the reasons behind the absence of many students from my school, I planned to
involve some of the teachers, students and parents to pour their opinions on this issue. I
requested my headmaster to call the concerned bodies which I had chosen through random
sampling. He studied my plan and eagerly helped me. He called those people on a public
holiday. I requested different groups of people i.e. students, teachers and, parents to seat
separately in their groups, discuss and pour their opinions on why most of the students run
away from school in tiffin time. I also requested them to give suggestions on how to discourage
them from running away. They discussed together in group and found out the following reasons
and measures to discourage students from running away from school.
Reasons opined by teachers
a. Students run away from school in tiffin time because we don’t take their attendance after
tiffin time.
b. Most challenging subjects like English, Mathematics, Science etc. are already taught before
tiffin periods.
c. In leisure periods some classes after tiffin are drawn back.
d. Some teachers feel comfortable if the naughty and noisy and very week students run away
in their periods.
e. Guardians are not very much concerned about the wrong activities of their children.
f. School’s main gate not not closed .
g. Some girl students make pretence of their periodical problems and go away.
h. Most of the students belong to poor class family and can’t manage for lunch period so they
go back home in tiffin time and can’t return to their class in time.
Measures to discourage them run away from school.
a. We should take attendance of the students after tiffin time and ask for clarification from
students next day scold and punish them if they are lying.
b. We can consult the guardians by phone calls and know the reasons behind their
absence.
c. Last periods shouldn’t be drawn back in leisure periods rather students can be in
engaged in various fun activities.
d. Library and recreation room should be vibrant.
e. Main gate of the school should be closed in tiffin time and lunch facility should be
managed in school canteen.
f. Menstruation pad, first aid box and some emergency medicines like pain killer with a
health assistant can be managed to prevent girl students really suffering from this
problem.
g. We should do action research to know why some students create noisy and naughty
environment in the classroom.

Opinions from Parents

a. Teachers don’t pay serious attention to very weak students and students are not highly
motivated.
b. Some teachers usually get absent or engaged in various school activities and avoid their
classes. They finish their course very fast in short period of time. They don’t pay
attention on whether most of the students learnt them or not according to their
children.
c. Some teachers are not very friendly to students. Consequently students are afraid of
asking their problems to such teachers, feel bored and avoid their classes.
d. Sometimes we call our son or daughter back home to perform various household
activities so that we can go for outside works.
e. Our children usually say that most of the teachers are in leave and we have always
leisure periods.

Measures to solve these problems.

a. Child friendly learning environment should be created in school.

b. Strict punishment should be made against those teachers always avoiding their
classes for unnecessary reasons.
c. School’s main gate should not be opened in tiffin time.
d. Student’s should be given positive motivation (counseling) so that students don’t
miss their classes.
e. Teachers should check their home assignment to know the progress of the students
and also to identify the causes behind poor approaches of some students due to
their irregularity.

Opinions from students.

a. Some classes are very boring and we don’t like to sit in such classes.
b. Some teachers can’t control noisy and naughty students.
c. Some students can’t manage their lunch, they go back home to eat lunch and when
they come back to school, school gate is not open due to their late arrival.
d. Sometimes we need to go home to do several household work.

Measures to solve these problems

a. Hard punishment makes some students keep away from teachers and spoil their
life so teacher should find the other option like being child friendly, motivation,
Identifying the weak areas of the students and helping them in need will certainly
bring such students close to their teahers and students can arouse interest in them.
b. Leisure period should be lessened or recreational activities can be conducted in a
school to prevent students running away from school.
c. Students can be allowed to go back home only after investigating the real problem
of the students. Students must take permission from their teachers to go back
home.
5. Implementation of the strategies.
I collected several different opinions from teachers, parents, and students regarding the causes
behind students usually getting absent from school after tiffin time and various measures to
overcome them. Though implementing all the measures can’t be possible at a time, I requested
the headmaster to call a staff meeting in which I was given a chance to present the reasons and
measures sought from different teachers, guardians and student.
We decided to implement a few of the measures to discourage students running away from
school and now we find the result very fruitful. I do hope that for the schools suffering from the
same problem, this project work will be highly appreciable.
