supplying sufficient voltage to the backplane.
- Over Temperature (Amber). LED is lit => power supply is near or
exceeding its maximum operating temperature.
- Overload (Amber). LED is lit => Power Supply is near or exceeding its
maximum output capability on at least one of its outputs.

On/Off Switch : controls the operation of the outputs of the supply.

Wiring Terminals : for +24V and –24V power, ground, and MOV
disconnect accept individual 14 to 22AWG wires.

LED status Meaning
MODULE OK RUN

On On The BEM341 module is correctly configured in the CPU.

On Off -the module does not exist in the CPU configuration, or

-the CPU configuration is incorrect, or

-configuration by maintenance tools is in progress, or

- the module is waiting for the external configuration.

On Flashing The module is waiting for an external configuration or

slowly bus arbiter. (Not yet loaded or at least one of the two
elements is incorrect.) via serial link.

On Flashing Loading via serial link of a configuration or bus arbiter

rapidly is in progress.

Flashing Off The memory tests are in progress.

One of the following situations has occurred :

Flashing together
- The microprogram checksum is incorrect, or

CROWBAR : Over voltage protection

• A set of resistors are connected to the

rotor windings, in order to rapidly
reduce the generator excitation current
in case of overvoltage caused by a
short-circuit across the terminals of the
generator.The voltage regulator
includes no circuit for thyristor control.

ELECTRONIC MODULES - April 2009 - P 21

Protection modules

Over voltage protection by non-linear resistors

• In small and medium sized generators, overvoltage

protection can also be carried out by a set of non linear
resistors (RNL). These resistors, connected in parallel with
the rotor circuit, are designed to limit the overvoltage to 75%
of the dielectric insulation test voltage of the rotor.

ELECTRONIC MODULES - April 2009 - P 22

Protection modules

CROWBAR : Over voltage protection

• Protection against positive overvoltage:

In case of a positive overvoltage, thyristor Th2 is forward biased
and the overvoltage is attenuated through a resistor network.
A current relay detects a current in the crowbar circuit and
gives a tripping order to the excitation system.

ELECTRONIC MODULES - April 2009 - P 23

Protection modules

CROWBAR : Over voltage protection

• Protection against negative overvoltage:

In case of reverse power from the generator field winding,
thyristor Th1 is forward biased and the energy of the winding
is discharged through Th1 and the discharging resistors. A
current relay detects a current in the crowbar circuit and
gives a tripping order to the excitation system.

ELECTRONIC MODULES - April 2009 - P 24

Protection modules

CROWBAR : Discharge of the windings

• system. When the field breaker is opened, the current in the

windings is discharged through a set of linear resistors.
These resistors are connected by means of an auxiliary NC
contact of the field breaker, which is closed 1 to 3 ms before
the opening of the main contacts (NO). The number of
resistors depends on the energy to be discharged and their
values are calculated such as to limit the peak voltage to a
value less than the maximum rupturing voltage of the field
breaker.
• By default, the discharging resistors are linear, but they can
also be of the non linear type if short discharging times are
required.
