AUDREY & DAISY

Written by Cynthia Martínez Ramos

Audrey and Daisy are two out of ten women to be raped in their life time in the United
States of America (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted), and also one in 71 men, making an
estimated total of 23.6 million survivors; and as minors a study from several child
protectives services agencies (2005 to 2013) have released to the public that strongly
suggests that 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse.
Rape culture is a disease, something that has to be eradicated, but, what is rape culture?
Rape culture is a word born in the Feminist movement to define the ways in which society
blamed victims of sexual assault and normalized sexual violence, it’s the blaming the
victim, it’s by making it seem less of a crime by bringing up what they were wearing, if
they were under the influence of any substance, if they were sex workers of if they
retrieved their consent.
Its letting pop music get away with lyrics like “you know you wanted” “that man is not
your mate and that’s why I’m gon’ take you”, it´s here in Monterrey and metropolitan area
getting 20 to 30 reported cases of rape, its women being scared to walk outside by
themselves, its defending celebrities who have been accused of rape calling the victims
attention whores, or that they are doing that for the money, its telling your little girls not do
dress a certain way, but forgetting to tell your boys not. To. Rape.
Another problem that goes by the hand of rape is sexually harassing, its when you go to the
street and get yelled at obscene things, it’s when men just feel entitled to touch you as if
you were there for their amusement, or to follow you as you walk, its them pressuring you
to give them something, pressuring you to have sex with them and this is something I have
experienced for myself and nothing could make me more lividly angry.
The way to end rape is to school people, that no means no, to let them know the impact that
it makes in their lives, all the suffering that the victim has to go through, all the shame, and
all the pain that the will undergo, because an f-ing pig couldn’t help himself, that it was an
impulse, or that the girl wanted it; are you angry yet? Well if not you´re about to, because
out of 1000 rapists, 994 walk free without a sanction; 310 are reported to the police, 57
lead to arrest, 11 cases get referred to prosecutors, 7 will lead to a felony conviction,
and 6 rapists will be incarcerated.
Only 344 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police. That means about 2 out
of 3 go unreported, and this happens because the victim is scared to speak up, afraid of
what precautions might bring and what people will say, victims need all of our support, not
only because of what they went through, but because we need to start empowering each
other instead of slut shaming them.
“Most men fear getting laughed at or humiliated by a romantic prospect while most women
fear rape and death.”
