Hummingbird, Type of breathing and Habitat.

Hummingbirds are small birds with colorful and iridescent feathers, the origin of their name
comes from the sound of them flapping their wings at a speed of 80 times per second; they
are the only birds that are able to fly in all directions, right, left, up, down, backwards and
can also fly upside down. Hummingbirds while resting breathe about 250 times per
minutes, the air enters the respiratory system through the nostrils that are at the base of
the bill and then proceeds to enter the small paired lungs; this lungs, unlike humans, are
connected to a complex system of air sacs that lie in spaces not occupied by other organs
and as they move, the pressure from its muscles forces air in and out of the air sacs, and
thus, maximizing air flow when the bird is most active and needs fresh oxygen.
The natural habitat of hummingbirds is in the America's; going from the north, like
Alaska and as far down south as Chile; the highest concentration of hummingbirds are in
South America and some will travel north every year according to which breed from the
300 species they are.

Source of Calories and Proteins

Nectar is an important part of the hummingbirds diet, since the large amount of sucrose in
the nectar gives the hummingbird the essential energy for their high metabolism, but this is
not the only thing that they eat;
A source of protein and calories are small insects, like larvae, insect eggs and spiders,
since they provide with salts, fat and nutritional components. They also feed of sap,
pollen and in rare cases, ashes and sand; they provide with vital minerals but not enough
for their normal diets.

Behavior and Reproduction

Hummingbirds, like most avian species communicate via visual displays, they are very
territorial and have been observed chasing each other and even larger animals like Hawks
and doves away from their territories; to reproduce, when the season comes, the males
seek for the females and puff their feathers and will perform several mating dances,
and/or the males will form a group called a lek , where they serenade females to try to
win their attention, after that, the gestation lasts 13-22 days and will lay 1 to 3 eggs.

Characteristics
Some interesting characteristics of this small creatures are that:

 The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world

 They help pollinate up to 1,500 flowers in a typical day of feeding

 They have a very powerful vision, as they are able to see every color that we can,

and can also process ultraviolet light, which allows them to see colors that we can

´t.

 Hummingbirds pack more feathers per inch than any other bird.

 They have forked tongues that are lined with fine hair-like extensions called

lamellae.

I identified the third and fifth characteristic, as they are all mentioned in some extent

above and I read the info previous to this work.
