Title: English Language proficiency and academic performance

Author: Avicenna J Med

Date Published: October 2015

It was also seen among our students that those who were fluent in English

perform better in terms of medical academic proficiency. We however had no

concrete data to support this observation. Theoretically, proficiency in English

language would play an important role in each component of the medical

assessment. The training in medical English, though limited, was assumed to

help students perform significantly better in formative assessment components

like student assignments, as they have more time for preparation. Our study

aimed to correlate English language proficiency with academic performance

among medical students in their preparatory year.

The article is relevant because it says English language proficiency is an

important factor in determining academic proficiency of students.

This study draws on qualitative and quantitative data to provide insights into

the international student experience from the perspectives of students and faculty.

It examines how English language proficiency affects academic and social

adjustment, identifies useful types of support, and considers the effects of English

proficiency on intercultural learning. Students are generally satisfied with their

proficiency, appreciate English as a Second Language courses, and feel their

English is improved through course work and social interaction. Professors feel

students' skills are adequate but could be improved, and report adjusting their

teaching approaches to accommodate non-native English speaker. Intercultural

interaction aids English development and intercultural growth, but students may

tend to remain within their own linguistic groups.

The students find it hard to communicate in some multi-linguistic student because

of lack in English proficiency.

Date Published: October 17, 2013

Summary:

To this effect, good language competence in English language may be a

positive predictive validity variable on the performance of students on intelligence

test. This and asserted when it was discovered that the measurements of

intelligence tend to reflect the learner’s mastery of language and in this sense

English language. It was on this note that the matter is serious because of the

influence English has on all the other subjects of the curriculum which invariably

pointed at the notion that students’ success in English language could influence

the overall performance of students in other disciplines.

In view of the findings of this study it is enough to conclude that proficiency in

English language is strongly related to students’ academic performance in science

and technical education. It is therefore very important to always ensure that

students who are admitted into these courses have good English language

proficiency.

Date Published: November 2015

Summary:

In a recent roundtable discussion organized by the British Council, key

stakeholders from the government, academe, private, and non-government

sectors acknowledged that even if the Philippines is doing fine in terms of English

competency, concerns on how much of a competitive advantage it still is for the

country were raised. The stakeholders agreed that the country needs to step up its

efforts in improving the teaching and learning of English, developing it as a vital

skill of the workforce. This is an initiative that could potentially strengthen the

Philippines' distinct advantage in this part of the world, particularly with the

upcoming ASEAN economic integration.

Summary:

Watching movies in English and listening to English spoken media is also

an effective way in improving English communication skills. Students nowadays

are highly exposed to music and films that are using the English language.

Although it has been observed that songs of today have a lot grammatical error (or

simply because of the writer’s choice to make the lyrics poetic), students tend to

adopt the way native speakers deliver the language.

Another helpful factor that students are being exposed to is the Internet where

sources of all information the need are always in their reach. Visiting websites,

reading different types of articles, and discussing topics in English help them

become confident in using English.\

Taking the help of technology can be an effective way in achieving higher

English proficiency. Interactive ways of learning can motivate students in exerting

more efforts.

Summary:

The project brings a digital alarm clock that tells the time, weather and

tides. The project is based on the movie Ironman; Tony Stark’s voice command

assistant. It shows the current time and also provides a text box to set the alarm.

Use your stylus to set the alarm time and press on set alarm button. This will give

you a voice message stating that the alarm is set. Now just wait till the current time

shown on the 7-seg display is equal to the alarm time. When its equal the alarm is

triggered, this will again give a voice message with current time and day. This

alarm will repeat four times before the minute value changes.

system was to address the disadvantages of the conventional lock and key used in

houses and apartments. Also, the design could significantly increase the level of

security via voice recognition. The study sought to address the following issues:

(a) voice recognition (b) voice command to unlock the door (c) the ease of

operation of the device and (d) the practicality of the device when installed at

houses and other structures.

Findings revealed that the device was efficient in terms of the following: (a)

voice recognition (b) voice command to unlock the door (c) the ease of operation

of the device and (d) the practicality of the device when installed at houses and

other structures, as examined by the evaluators.
