II. SUMMARY

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is an endemic neglected disease in tropical and subtropical

countries. In view of the human suffering, social stigma and costs associated with LF morbidity, and in
response to a specific resolution of the World Health Assembly, the Global Program to Eliminate
Lymphatic Filariasis was launched by the World Health Organization in 2000, with the objective of
eliminating LF as a public health problem by 2020. The data gathered were stored and analyzed using the
Epi Info statistics package, version 7. This study received prior approval from the institution’s Research
Ethics Committee. LF-positive cases were treated in Olinda’s Health Department. For men the main
reasons for systematic noncompliance with MDA were that “the individual had not received the
medication”, and for women “the individual either feared experiencing adverse reactions to
diethylcarbamazine”, and for both sexes “the individual had not taken the drug because he did not have
the disease”. Among the population studied, two cases (one male and one female, aged 13 and 39 years,
respectively) tested positive for LF antigens. These cases did not show microfilaremia in the night
membrane filtration method.Attention focusing on the population that is systematically non compliant
with MDA is crucial for ensuring adequate compliance with treatment and thereby optimizing actions and
resources. The results from the present study revealed an evident need for surveillance of this population.
Such observations will provide important information for achieving the goal of eliminating LF.

III. NURSING IMPLICATIONS

A. To Nursing Practice
Implication to nursing practice is that this journal aimed to investigate the epidemiological
characteristics, antigenic profile, perceptions, attitudes and practices of individuals who have been
systematically non-compliant in mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns targeting lymphatic
filariasis. This can be an important matter for nursing practice since we are looking for something we can
based on that is reliable and can be applied to practice in a health setting since most of the LF studies are
still looking for some ways to eliminate this disease then at least we have an idea what are the perceptions
of those who are infected by this and how can we make plans or interventions for them.

B. To Nursing Education
Implication to nursing Education is that Lf is a rare case and most people who are suffering
from LF don’t know what causes the disease, or we can say that even if they know already the cause of it
still they just ignore it since LF is not visible in a short period of time. This journal help us to know about
the characteristics of a person who are positive to LF and to look and gain knowledge about their
perception about the disease and why even if this is a rare case and still there are a lot of people that are
affected. The knowledge that this journal provide us can be used as a guide to us when encountering a
case like this.

C. To Nursing Research
Implication to Nursing research is that though they studied already about their aim, but still
adoption of measures to minimize the impact of adverse effects and improvement of drug distribution
logistics are needed. For future research this journal can be a basis to improve and have a related topic
about it but focuses on the adoption of measures to minimize the impact of adverse effects and
improvement of drug distribution. Also some recommendations about improving the awareness of people
on how they view the disease that this can be fetal if it was left untreated.

IV. PERSONAL INSIGHTS

I strongly agree about this journal because they focus on what are the characteristic,
perception and attitudes and practices of individual suffering from LF disease and this is important also to
know and to evaluate what really is their point of view about the case they are having. This can be a basis
to improve some goals or on how we can implement some interventions that are really needed for them.
Also for us to achieve the goal of eliminating the cases of LF.
