Adding / Subtracting Mixed Numbers

Method 1

1) Put them in stacked form.


2) Add / subtract the fraction parts first.
3) Add / subtract the whole numbers.
4) Simplify if necessary.

 If the fraction parts have different denominators, change them


to have a common denominator before adding / subtracting.
 When adding, if the fraction parts add up to 1 or more than 1,
carry to the whole number.
 When subtracting, If the first fraction is less than the second
fraction, borrow from the whole number.

1. Write the mixed numbers as improper fractions.
2. Add or subtract the fractions.
3. Simplify (Reduce) to the simplest form.
