Pre-Assessment for Writing Unit


The pre-assessment for social studies and writing was given on Thursday November 5, 2020
during the intervention period of class. Since my mention teacher recemented I do it during
intervention for a higher turnout, the students who showed up to school that day where the ones
who were able to do my pre-assessment I tried to test more students on that Friday but no new
students showed up to the intervention period. The class only has 18 students in it, but they have
a high absent rate and only get about 50% of students (no more than 8) doing work that is posted
on google classroom. For this pre-assessment, the students used their iPads to access the zoom
meeting and I gave them the questions orally like in a conservation. I prefaced the assessment
that “it is okay if you do not know all these answers because you may not have learned them yet,
I am just trying to see what you know” to ensure they do not get nervous. I was able to assess
only 9 students which was disappointing but my mentor teach was worried it would be less if I
just posted it to google classroom which also relied heavily on the parents reading them the
questions and not giving them the answers. I also wanted to do verbal answered because my
students being first graders their verbal vocabulary are vastly larger than their written vocabulary
and so I figured it would allow them to elaborate more if they did have some background
knowledge on any of this information.
This assessment found that 8 of 9 students did not know what an informative text was. 1
of the 9 students did not respond to my question. Which is what we will be learning about and
writing one of our own during unit week. This told me I should do an introductory lesson. For
this social studies portion of this lesson, I also asked a question. I asked what do you know about
the traditions practiced in the holidays Hanukkah and Kwanzaa? Out of the 9 students, 8 students
did not know and 1 student, the same as before did not respond. Student 1 was among the 9 who
were assessed but student 2 was not. Her mom works afternoons and so she had to go to daycare
after lunch and she does not log back into zoom at daycare. The mentor teacher is trying work
something out with the mom to find a solution to try to get her on when she goes to daycare.
