Ambulance Equipment

AMBULANCE

1. OBJECTIVE

The function of onsite Ambulance is to provide medical care as quickly as possible. Medical staff
will be able to come to the patient and gives hi medical care. Ambulance must be installed and
proposes the level of care corresponding to the work site.

2. DEFINITIONS
Ambulance = vehicle for transportation of sick or injured people, to provide medical care to a
patient in emergency.
A dedicated driver will be assigned to each ambulance and will be available 24/7 on site.

3. SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITY


The vehicles provided shall fulfil all local legislations and shall be able to safely transport a
patient on a stretcher with sufficient space. They will be large enough to provide treatment,
including CPR care, while transportation.
The ambulance could be equipped when necessary to:
▪ Carry out an initial emergency care, assess the seriousness of the condition of an injured
patient, and provide a precise alert specifying the level of threat,
▪ Administer emergency medical / paramedical and first aid treatment.
The ambulance is available 24/7.
There should be at minimum one ambulance + one driver for each onsite medical facility
Ambulance driver shall:
▪ Be trained with local and international regulations
▪ Be trained at Advanced First aider
▪ Have dedicated fitness to work with yearly update

4. LAYOUT

4.1. General layout


The ambulance must be adapted to the country and the work site
Ambulance will provide:
▪ Medical staff can work in standing position, when equipped for resuscitation
▪ The ambulance frame should have air conditioning (and/or heating) and be well ventilated,
▪ If required a 4X4 wells could be proposed (work site in sand, desert, ice, etc.)
▪ The ambulance is shared in two parts:
- the treatment section
- the driver section

▪ Vehicles shall be parked in shaded and secure areas


▪ Close parking to be considered in area when weather conditions are strong (cold – hot)
▪ In order to ensure vehicle efficiency, qualified personnel shall perform the prescribed
preventive maintenance and record any services carried out. Fuel must be available 24/7.

4.2. Specific layout

All the ambulance must be equipped with:


▪ Warnings flash light and sirens, specific and reflective colours, easily recognizable by
everybody on site and outside the site
▪ Seat belts on any places in the front of the ambulance (drivers) and behind for the medical
team
▪ Communication electronic device and systems to call and to be called: VHF
▪ Hygiene installation shall include at least small sink + soap and paper dispenser, waste
segregation (including needles), and washable work surface.

4.3. Medical layout


▪ A stretcher could be easily and quickly installed, with a ramp system to facilitate the
loading of the patient on the stretcher
▪ The medical equipment is mobile, it must easily accessible and securely attached when the
ambulance moves
▪ Medical fluid ramps; air, oxygen connected to the provision of oxygen, etc.
▪ Emergency equipment shall be kept in one or more Emergency Packs and kept inside the
vehicle, when the temperature allows it or as the packs containing drugs which may be
damaged by high temperatures, inside the medical facility
▪ The list of the contents of each “Emergency Pack” shall be clearly visible, both inside and
outside the rucksack
▪ Each pack shall be regularly checked to ensure its readiness for use in an emergency.

5. EQUIPMENT
The list is indicative, the items and quantity should be adapted depending on:
▪ Work location – remote site or not
▪ Work activity – at risk or not
▪ Number of Personnel On Site (POS)
▪ Level and access to medical care in the surroundings (city, client, etc.)
▪ Laws and regulations in the country + international regulation of Labor Law (ILO)
▪ The medical / paramedical staff capabilities

5.1. Non-medical equipment


Communication equipment: GPS – cellular phone and radio (VHF) or satellite phone
(when allowed by the local regulations- licenses)

5.2. Medical equipment


The equipment to get fit the patients (stretcher, splints, etc.) could be stay in the ambulances 24/7.
Medical furniture
Emergency stretcher + appropriate ramp
Fridge compartment for storage of medicines and drugs
Lockable cupboards for storage of medical equipment, consumables and medicines –
with the list of contents clearly visible for each cupboard
Infusion stand + serum basket

Diagnosis equipment = in the Emergency bag


Diagnosis set for examination: stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, thermometer;
otoscope, peak-flow meter, pocket lamp, reflex hammer, etc. + related consumables
Electrical suction unit + consumables / batteries + manual suction unit
Mini laboratory equipment: Glucometer + consumables / batteries, Hemocue® +
consumables / batteries + hemostatic tourniquets
Portable automatic external defibrillator (AED) + consumables / batteries and/or
portable multi-parametric monitor (cardiac monitoring, BAP, oxymetry) + external
electro-systolic pacemaker function and manual defibrillator + consumables / batteries
Oxygen – portable bottles fitted with regulator (2 outlets, one high pressure for the
ventilator and one low pressure) + system to fix bottles

Treatment equipment – in emergency “packs”


Back board, bucket, vacuum mattress, etc. adapted to the ambulance stretcher
Evacuation chair
First Aid pack
Resuscitation and tracks pack
Trauma pack and dressings
Small immobilization equipment: splints, cervical collars,

Hygiene, Disinfection and Waste


Disinfection wipes and product for medical equipment,
Soap and paper dispenser
Waste segregation and needles boxes

5.3. Consumables equipment


Treatment consumables –stores in the ambulance and/or in emergency bag
Bandages & dressings consumables - adhesives plasters, tapes, stretch tape, absorbent
dressing / underpads, sutures, gauzes, gloves, etc. all in different sizes and types
Burn care emergency kits – Sterile sheets, sterile compresses, sterile wear (coat, calots,
masks and gloves), foil blanket, and Waterjel® or other burn wrap…
Catheters – tubes and drains for venous, urinary, digestives and tracheal tracks, etc.
injection supplies – syringes, needles, infusion set, etc.– different sizes and types
Oxygen supplies = Guedel® cannula, oxygen mask and sprongs rapid intubation track
– combitube® - Fastrack®, resuscitator connector + mask + balloon – different sizes

Other consumables
Beds linen and blankets, single use or not depending on the site,

5.4. Medicines and drugs


The list of medicines and drugs will be determined by:
▪ The medical staff of the medical facility and kept stored in the clinic in a dedicated bag
ready to go.
▪ Laws and regulations in the country + international regulation of Labor Law (ILO)

6. MEDICAL PERSONNEL

▪ The number and qualifications of the health care personnel to be assigned in the
ambulances depend on the local regulations and laws and size of the site
▪ Only proven, experienced or qualified drivers shall drive the vehicles
▪ Depending on the situation / site, ambulance driver – ambulance shall be available 24/7
