My friend John failed the driving test for the third time.

How come ?

In the beginning , he was being tested on his ability to drive in heavy traffic.
【test sb on sth...

John
John did a great job in this part.

Having been instructed to drive out of the city, he became increasingly confident about himself.
【注意:这里 Having been instructed .... 相当于 After having been instructed】

Thinking that he had surely passed the test , he gradually relaxed and was even beginning to
enjoy the test.

The examiner was clearly pleased with John’s performance , as he smiled and gave John the final
challenge.

John
John was asked to imagine a kid suddenly crossing the road in front of him.

Once the examiner tapped on the window, John was required to stop the car within just five feet.

John
John was sure that it would be a piece of cake and continued driving.

A few minutes later , he heard the examiner tapping on the window loudly.

He suddenly got so nervous that it took him quite a long time to react to the sound.

He sharply pressed the brake before both of them were thrown forward.
【sharply = very suddenly 】

With a mournful look on his face, the examiner told John that he had just killed the imaginary
child.

Not surprisingly , John failed again.

So please keep this in mind: being too relaxed or overconfident during the driving test is a
no-no.
